Strange Stealership Encounter

First let me say that if someone is truly a moron, I'm not going to defend them.....  that being said...

Moron, noob, stealer, thief, idiot....  strong words.. strong words being said by people who obviously have never worked at a busy dealer. So, your a Hayabusa expert. Cool. How long did it take you to get there? Weeks,months... years!..  Now do that for 2000 more models..  Suzukis Kaws Hondas.. whatever..  do it for bikes then watercraft and snowmobiles and generators and ATVs..  What's the perfect prop for a 93 JS750? what's the good tire for a 2008 Teryx? what's the startup draw capacity for a GA1000 generator??   My point? You folks with your propensity for calling names wouldn't last ONE FREAKING DAY behind the counter at a busy dealership before some customer asked you a question you didn't know the answer to!..

  I GUARANTEE IT!!!...

and when they left the counter they might think you're a moron.

Rant mode off...  I now return you to your regularly scheduled programming

It is rare to find a parts department that really knows what they're doing, due to 1) they're being paid peanuts so anyone can go in there and train how to look up parts, that's about it. And 2) as stated above, there is a tremendous variety of bikes out there. For difficult parts, I understand. What sets me off is when you seemingly have a very easy question and they just can't get it.

You know what.....its their job to know products for every bike their dealership sells. I work in the banking industry...if I don't know what kind of rates my institution is doing on loans or deposits...then I may have just lost out on alot of money. If its your job no matter what it may be...shouldn't you strive to be the best at it...which means knowing your products? Just my

When I came in the guy was already there. He might have asked for a speed healer and when I walked up I only caught the part of the conversation where he was trying to explain what it was. Maybe a few of you are right . I just assumed that a parts person would be knowledgeable about a wide range of after market products. Most times when you go into a NAPA or some auto parts store most of the counter people know a lot about different cars. I assumed that since a lot of the guys ride sport bikes they would know about stuff like this. But how hard would it have been to do a google search and offer to order it for the customer. You keep letting money walk out of the door and one day your gonna have to close the doors for good.

People please be aware that you have several members of this forum that work at dealerships, myself included. Like everything else, you have good and bad in every business. I went to work for this dealership AFTER being a customer for over 25 years. I can assure you our parts guys know their stuff. I will also assure you that guys like Vman know a little about the business too. Is it necessary to call those of us who make their living in this business names and suggest we are all crooks?

I'd rather it happen in parts than in service. LCB already beat me to it on Powersports East. They have told me....

1)Only SOME years of Hayabusa's need thottlebodies synch'd
2)You can't remap the ECU, you HAVE to use a Powercomander
3)They removed my pairvalve, and didn't plug anything up
4)If I didn't have my work done by them it would void my waranty

I can see how someone only dealing with parts numbers, for min. wage could not know...but not the srevice dept.

I can tell you from experiance that there are some real dumb folk that they let work behind the parts counter in some places.  I work at a dealer in the service dept and I have been to our parts counter a few times and gotton stupid crap like this and I WORK THERE I had to show them that stuff does exist
My favorite is handing some item to parts counter person to pay for it and they say where did you get this? And I say - how about off your shelf?... Was in A.zone auto parts here a couple days ago here in N Fla, and I went to the counter to pay and the gal says Debit? I said no I want to charge it, she says Charge? I says yah, charge. Then she says I dont know how to do a charge I have to get the manager!!!

I made friends with the service manager--a guy who actually worked on bikes. When I need a part, or have a question, he's the go-to guy. And he always takes care of me. And I always make sure to thank him, and when the bike's being serviced, I ask him if he wants me to run out for some good coffee.

You have to take into account that these people go there from nothing just looking for a JOB.
They are generally not motorcycle enthusiasts. The same thing happens with auto parts store guys.

Why is it that they only make peanuts? My favorite dealer had a parts guy who was the bomb. He knew his job inside and out but left to work for the power company because the dealer didn't have medical insurance for his employees. Said he couldn't afford it. I almost cried when he left. The dealer has a three story house with a four car garage. He drives fancy cars and has a helicopter but can't afford to have benefits, my butt.

My past experience with dealerships has been both good and bad.

I stop in and talk to salesman about buying a black/grey 06. None on showroom floor. Guy says "let me check in back"... "Nope we don't have one". "Can give you 500 off on red one"... "Naaa really want the fastest color" I leave. Stop at store buy cycle trader mag. See all the Busa sales in there. Call up one number to see if had black one in stock. Guy says "Sure we at.... It's still in the crate though." I end up driving back to same location. I say " How long this been here?" He says "For few days" I say "AH! That guy over there said you didn't have any!"

Now not sure what the other guy did to check, but the thing was in the computer and everything.

I make the deal on pricing. Salesmen say "How you gonna pay for it?" I say "Cash". He says "why cash? Why not finance?" I say " ERRR because I can. Give me one reason why I should finance?" He had no reply....

Decide to hit stealership closer for first service. Make an appointment drop bike off that morning. They say "It will be done by noon and will call when it's done." I say "What time you'll open to?" "6pm" I call them on my way back home from work as it's on the way. About 5:30 now and get the response... "We haven't gotten to your bike yet" I say "Well don't you think a call would of been nice?" Bike got done next day. I understand things come up and stuff doesn't get done, BUT at least inform the customer what is going on.

I'm on my third Stealership an they have been fantastic. On their own account. Not from me complaining about the other places. I'm very easy going and like to see how they normally do business so can pass proper judgment. Being a pain in the ars customer only gets the dealer not interested in giving you their full service cause they don't want to be around you. It's only human. The simple little stuff like "I'm going to get a soda out of the machine you want one?" Gives them a positive attitude towards you and Vise Versa. Tip if you are happy also.

Lack of knowledge is one thing, but lack of organization is a totally different story. Trades like parts man and such has dwindled in experience. Mostly due to the amount of $$ paid to them and the experience needed. Franchise's all all about making the most $$ they can. Can operate a computer then you pretty much qualify for the job. If it's not in the computer then they don't have it. Special orders... Well that's where those mags come in they hand you.

So because your members of this forum we shouldn't talk about the crap we get from dealers??Read back over the last two pages, when they turn positive you'll get my respect but thats gona take a while. When the customer knows more about the product or part somethings wrong. You work for the dealership, sorry, but the owner is a crook. The dealership doesn't design the Busa the dealership doesn't build the Busa but the dealership stands there with their hand out and cant even represent or know how to fix your Busa.If I could type I would fill 6 pages with stories about dealers. But be quite gang there are guys here that work for dealers.TEHE

Ive gone to the dealership for a part with the correct part number and had the guy tell me i had the wrong part nummber so he sold me the part he says is correct and of course when i got home and attempted to install it it was wrong. went back and got the correct part with the same part number the other guy told me was wrong. I buy almost everything now mailorder if I get the wrong part its my fault. I really hate it when they had to order the part i wait and then get the wrong part. And they wonder why riders dont support their local dealer!

My only point is that not all dealers are the same. If you have a dealership that is not worthy of your business, don't give it to them. The same can be said for any type of business.

I thought this was about a "strange" stealership experience. Sounds normal to me.

"Strange" would be when you walk in, there is no line, you don't have to wait for somebody to finally help you, the parts guy is knowledgeable and friendly, they have what you want/need, and you don't get ripped off. "Bizarre" would be all of the above, plus everything is on sale, and you get a free T-shirt, and a complimentary bikini bike wash.

There are some dealerships that are good and some are bad. I usually go only 2 diffent ones here in Columbus. Ask Powersports off Bryce Road and Motorsports of Columbus off Morse road. Each of them have pros and cons. I personally like to go to Motorsports of Columbus with large issues things that need the extra care there. The reason is because they are not in a such of a rush that they will forget something. The rate of labor is high though. Now if I have issues that aren't exactly a big issue but will take time, I go to Ask off Bryce road. The rate of labor is not as high so if it is going to take long time, they will charge less. The cons is they seem to be a little in a rush and what they need is more help in the service department. But they do good work. I personally like both the lead service guys that work at both service departments. They are real good guys. I do tip at each place......I figure usually my issue is a issue that I require quick work.....this way they remember you and will get you in and out the next time. Again, these are the only places that I will take my bike in Columbus, Ohio. There is another shop called Bike2nu or something like that on main st east side. I won't step a foot on their property.....the reason....I called there once about how much it would cost for them to install my Muzzy full exhaust for my busa that I had purchased off the internet. The owner answered the phone and just treated me like a complete jack ass. He was EXTREMELY rude to me. I even had to ask him what is his problem is. Needless, to say I will never go there EVER!!!! I figure if the owner cannot treat a prospective customer with any respect, than I cannot expect them to work on my bike. I have heard from other people the same thing about that owner....so I know that it was not just me. Anyways, when you get work done at dealerships or ask for advice and so on, it is good to find the right one that you feel the most COMFORTABLE with......

Same story-  Customer service on the decline. Greedy companies don't want to pay good employess for their experience so they leave, and then they hire anyone who will work for the lowest wages who know nothing.

Welcome to America!

We're getting exactly what we deserve..

If you find a good shop, I hope you will try and do everything you can to purchase goods from them and keep them in business.
