Holy smoke. I ain't got the words.

Of course, if I screw this up tonight, I'll have plenty of words but they won't be directed at you!

I can't thank you enough.

No problem guys! I have to admit, I love my Haynes manual!!

Couldn't have done it without you. VERY much appreciated, again more than I can say.

I'll probably go out and get that Haynes manual. Would have never considered it without you posting the page I needed. I'm sure there are other pages I'll be able to use in the future.

Time to take a class, maybe. Or do a video.

Anyhoo, here's how it went:

In the first place, it was a bear to get the damn hoses off of all the nipples. One of them simply would not come off and I destroyed 1/2" of the end of it getting it loose. Had to trim it up with a razor blade. Also, it left a little rubber ring around the nipple. I sprayed some WD-40 on my fingers and was able to rub it off.

Of course, being the amateur I am, I didn't have a cap for the two nipples which need to be closed off entirely. A little invention was in order and since the reloading bench was close at hand, a .223 bullet (NOT a live round!!!) fit a piece of hose just perfectly.

Pic. Note the page underneath!

Next step is to hook everything up to the Guage.

Red arrows are hoses to the guage.

Blue arrows are the hoses to the IAP, now detached and laying there, helplessly.

Two yellow arrows are the cap offs on throttle bodies #1 and #4. I don't know where those two hoses lead.

The purple arrow is the retainer spring and YES, I remembered to put it back before I closed everything up!

Looks to me like a little ingenuity goes a long ways!

Glad everthing worked out for you.

And no, leaving it hanging on the side of the bike during use is NOT a good idea!  Mercury bounces too much!

Notes:  I had a tough time starting the bike.  When they say use the idle adjust screw to get the RPM's up there, they mean it.  Ya hafta twist it in enough to get it going.

Once you do get it running, it runs REALLY rough.  But well enough to do the adjustments.

When you do the adjustments, don't press on the screwdriver too hard.  Per the Haynes page you sent to me.  Per me, it revs the engine.  The biggest danger is, if you over reve the engine during this, you could suck mercury into your engine and out your exhaust and that would be a very bad thing!

After you think you have everything adjusted right, let it run for a few more seconds and make sure everything STAYS adjusted.  Be ready to readjust if you miss it the first couple of times.

Per the page you sent, I adjusted the #1 and #2 (clutch side adjuster) first, then the #3 and #4 (throttle side adjuster) next, then #2 and #3 (center adjuster) last.  Then, just fine-tuned it as needed to get them to line up EXACTLY even.

Total time spent, once I got the bike's hoses off the throttle bodies to the time I reconnected them all, FIVE minutes.

Easiest maintenance job I've ever done, even easier than oil changes.  The $85 I paid for the guage has already been recouped.  Better yet, I did it better than the shop guy did last time I paid HIM $85 to do it for me.  For some reason, I can FEEL the throttle bodies rattling in the handlebars when they're out of synch.  Last time he did the adjustment, I rode away thinking it was still out of synch and that it hadn't been done right.  Tonight, I rode it around the block a couple times afterwards and it was SMOOTH AS SILK.

In the interest of keeping some other poor schlepp like me from having to endure a crappy manual for the California 2003, I wrote all of that above.  An inadequate thanks to H.org just for being here.  Y'all mean sooooo much to me!  >hug<  >sniff<

-->Sappy/Mushy switch move to OFF position<--  (Sorry.  Didn't mean to let that switch slip!)

Next, I need to learn how to do the tappet clearances!  Any instructors wanna take me under their wing for that?!!

And since the fat hose you referrenced isn't shown in my manual, I would venture to guess that it has something to do with Califonia emissions...
I should mention that I followed the fat hose back to a canister under the right side of the bike, near the rear. It looks exactly like an emissions device for California, ergo, you'll only see the fat hose in California bikes.

The only part that sounds a little off to me is that it was running rough. Did you have the IAT sensor hooked up?

It wasn't horribly rough. Just not the usual clean, clear running we're used to hearing. Of course, having the tank lifted makes it louder, etc. etc. Maybe that's it. I did have the IAT sensor connected as instructed. You can see it hanging off the side of the bike above the shifter in my photo above.

In any case, it's running peachy keen now!

And believe you me, if you're ever in the area, swing by and we'll have summa dese:

... I think I'll set up an appointment so I could hook up that "thingamabob doohickey" to my throttle bodies
tounge.gif
... so pretty much the only time consuming event is removing the obstructions and figuring out what goes were, right Lou?

Exactly. Understanding the directions is the biggest pain in the ass. Let's video tape it when we do yours.
