This just might be the place.......

Hello all,

Several months ago I bought a 1st Gen, 2001 Hayabusa and have loved every minute of it. Unfortunately, it needs a couple tweeks and repairs. These include a still speedo/tach, new brakes and rotors, removing the stem of a snapped off fairing bolt (I really need help with this one not quite sure how to do this without drilling it out), integrated tail light (as of now no signals), a bolt kit (fairings were held together with zip ties), and because of a novice mistake I now have to paint the gas tank. That one is a little embarrassing but a lesson learned.

With all this work ahead of me I've been combing the site for 2 months now looking for anything that might help me out. Most of the time I found what I needed and then some. So, a week ago I decided this was the place for my baby and I, more me than her of course. I think I read somewhere there was a rule to post a pic. I attached two I know they aren't that clear. She is in pieces right now I'l post more in a few weeks.

For your snapped off cowling bolt, I'm assuming it's one of the large bolts that attaches to the engine mount. There's rarely a simple solution, but here are a couple you can try: get some krazy/super glue, the gel works best as it doesn't run, and attach a smaller diameter bolt to it, allow to dry and turn it out by hand. If that don't work buy an EZ-out or other brand bolt extractor. Again you want to attempt to turn it out by hand, otherwise if the extractor isn't perfectly alligned and you use a drill it'll snap the extractor. Don't ask how I know this.

Good luck with your project!

yes, It was one of the big bolts attached to engine mount. It was an alan head that was stripped when I got her. I tried an EZ out and it just drilled a reverse hole in the bolt because the bolt wouldn't budge. Then, I took my dremmel and cut a deep vertical groove in the head so I could you my flat head drill bit. Well................The torgue snapped my drill bit in two. That's when I figured I'd get a hack saw and cut it off behind the fairing. If it is in tight enough to snap my bit I'm not sure what will turn it. What else might I consider?

So you cut the head off the bolt? ??? Probably not the best course of action, at least prior you had a big something to work with. Have you applied a penetrating oil such as Liquid Wrench? Do that and tap on the bolt to vibrate it, allowing that oil to work it's way in there. Repeat, repeat, repeat, allow to sit overnight and repeat. You want that penetrant to really get in there and do it's job. If you still have a nub sticking out use your Dremel to cut groove for bit, and I'd use an impact driver with the hardened bits. OR, you can try the EZ-out again. Last ditch effort would be to just drill the bolt all the way through. Chances are you'll drill a lil off center, at a slight angle or just completely F it up. Don't sweat it to much 'cause you can always drill it oversize and put a Heli-Coil insert in there.

Again, good luck!
