tire plug

i asked on here on another post and got one reply stating no but i want suggestions from other people. i just got my hayabusa last night awesome bike. the only problem i found on it was it has a nail in the tire... well after the initial investment of the bike i wont be able to afford buying a tire for a month or two. my question is would you plug the tire or just leave the nail in it. im scared to leave the nail in it cause i dont want to find the bike on the floor in the morning cause it lost the air during the night and fell over.

It's not going to fall over if the tire goes flat. Is it the rear tire or the front tire? I'd be a little reluctant to plug the front tire but I have plugged the rear and used it for a burn out tire. I just never exceed 100 mph on a plugged tire. Everyone says no and I agree, a plugged tire is not totally safe even if you don't go fast. My advice would be to scrap up a $150 and get a new tire!

I've seen/heard/read 20 to 1 stories of tires going over plugs going bad, and I think tires going bad is pretty gosh darned rare. That said, I would buy a new tire before plugging on my Busa cuz I just dont want that gambling risk factor at high speeds [speeds only done on a closed track, professional driver of course].

I had a plug in my old KAW: brand new tire, two days later - NAILED! talked to the tech about the procedure and it seems very safe, solid and he was knowledgable and professional. So, I trusted the process. It rode fine.

Correct answer- time for a new tire. My opinion- plug it- plug it- plug it! I've done it several times (actually plugging it myself) and only had one instance where it didn't hold for the life of the tire, and even then it was a SLOW leak that never let the tire drop below about 25lbs. Rode hard on all of 'em, even top end runs, and I'm here to talk about it.

I'm a daily driver and i've plugged a few tires in the past including a front one on my 750gsxer . I did have a plug in my rear busa tire last year for about 2 months . The tire was pretty new so I couldn't afford another one right away . I don't recomend pluging a front , but the back is okay if its not on the side . Keep checking your pressure and get a new one when you can and yes , do not go 100mph. I also limited my long freeway riding as much as possible

Replace it. Do you really want to be thinking about it while your riding? It may very well hold or it may not. The fact of the matter is that you only have only two tires gripping the ground. If you loose one of them you have a heavy unicycle. Ever figured out how to ride one of those?

Unless money is a HUGE deal, I would definitely go and buy a new tire. It doesn't seem like it would be a whole lot of fun riding around on the Busa wondering about the tire going out on you.

I can't even begin to tell you how many times I've plugged a car tire without ever having a problem.  But when it came to plugging a bike tire I could never bring myself to try it.  Only having two tires under me I didn't want to take a chance.

I've plugged my tire with the "string" type plugs.  It actually works pretty darn good.  Can be bought at any car store.  I've done this on the V-Strom most recently and on my older bikes.

I would not do it on the Busa though.  The high torque/hp might rip the plug right out.  And it was tough enough trying to get the plug through the steel cords on the V, it might be even more difficult getting it through the Busa tire carcass.

I'd do it in an emergency situation, like to get it to the tire shop to buy a new tire. That's it.

yeah, I'd think keeping a plug kit and some CO2 canisters in teh hump would be great for fixing a flat on the road.... providing the flat is plugable. I hit a piece o beer bottle at 80 on the hwy and it tore a hole in my tire...went down like the titanic and there was no patchin that one

I'd also maybe suggest that if funds are available you keep a spare set of new tires in your garage. Sometimes during the peak riding season, when you want to ride most and shid happens, you can't get tires very quickly.

thanks for all your replies. i was thinking i can also just leave the nail in it it hasnt leaked yet not sure whats safer though the plug or the nail. by the way the tire is new not even 100 miles old.

#1 pull the nail out!!!! If it does leak the nail will release way before a plug.
#2 My opinion on plugs is that they are used on motorcycle tires only to get you home so you can replace the tire the next day.
#3 You stated you just got the bike and can't afford a new tire right now. Well don't expect to be happy when you are making payments on that new bike after the nail was thrown and the tire let go at speed.
#4 Take the bike to the dealer where you bought it and see if they will replace the tire. If not maybe they will cut you a deal. DOUBT IT THOUGH.
Good luck and remember you will probably ride slower knowing that the tire could go flat at any minute!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

GO TO THE PLACE YOU BOUGHT THE BIKE AND SEE IF THEY WILL LET YOU CHARGE A NEW TIRE, CHANCES ARE THEY WILL. THATS WHAT I WOULD DO.

It might be ok plugged but WHY take the chance if they will let you charge one.. Good luck..

I'd probably not ride until I could afford a new tire. With only two tires holdin' you up, the risk of losing one is not really an acceptable risk for me. Fwiw, if I simply couldn't get a new tire right away and just had to ride, I'd probably get the tire patched from the inside instead of plugging. Just my $.02...

As far as leavin' the nail in the tire... no frickin' way! As was already said, a nail will come out quicker than a plug will...

Like bullettrain said; "get the tire patched from the inside". Go to a good bike shop and have it done right. They will use an umbrella plug. Do it yourself plug kits are great for emergencies but not long term.

I have plugged multiple tires an rode them just like I do normally. Fast, slow, twisties, it really doesn't matter. I am of the opinion that they hold up just fine. I always used the 3 dollar wal mart kit even.

Everyone is scared of the plugs, but who has ever heard of a plug coming out?
In ten years of motorcycling, on several boards, I never have.

A go between is to get the motorcycle shop to put a professional patch on the tire. They hold up really, really great I hear, but then you are paying someone to break down your tire and patch it so it will cost way more than a plug.

Yeah Im a cheep sucka.

Maybe I am just lucky or stupid or both.

I am going with both!

I've had a plug blow out of a car tire and it wasn't a three dollar Walmart kit. It was done by a tire shop.

Had a few that didn't blow out, but developed leaks. That's why I'd never trust them on a bike. I've never had a patch to fail. Not saying they can't, just saying I've never seen it happen.

Leave the nail inside?!! are you crazy....
wow.gif

I'd suggest you remove the nail and plug it for your emergency use! If you dont want to replave your tire, then go get a patch from inside... They hold pretty well! Just ma two cents!
