Turbo & insurance

Hello all, I was just wondering if my insurance rates would go up if I get a turbo kit for the bike. I know every insurance company is different but I was wondering what the common practice of turbo bikers was when it comes to insurance companies. Do you even tell 'em? And if anyone has, what was the response of said agency.

Any help is appreciated

I think they just go by the book..as in stock. I don't think it matters what else is done to it. But I wouldn't say anything anyways

Here's the problem... If you don't tell them and you have an accident? The adjuster will see the Turbo and they will be well within their rights NOT to COVER ANYTHING... Your choice.

Chances are good though that unlike USAA many places may not even hae a table to account for a Turbo on a Busa so it prolly will not make any difference. I would call around to OTHER insurance companies first and find out what they say rate wise. for a turbo VS non-turbo Busa. Then decide how to proceed.

I'd recommend telling them.

OH and TBRO is right, all the accessories and Bullshid you throw on your Busa generally will not be covered unless specifically listed under your policy. So all they will value is stock busa with the miles and such that are on it. FWIW.

Great guys, thanks for the suggestions. i think Im gonna take the advice and call around a bit to see the reactions of different insurance companies. Either way thougH, I only have liability coverage, so if I dont tell them and I have an accident they wont cover ME anyway. I know I should really look at getting a full coverage policy, but with Busa at age 24, eeeehhh I think Ill take my chances.

Thanks again guys

After the turbo and other mods, I called my agent and then took a copy of all receipts and pics to them. The bike is now covered for replacement value and classed as a show bike (not many yearly miles). Not all agents will do this, but I have a good one

Never hurts to inquire...I'll be taking a loss if I loose mine...Haven't attempted an insurance upgrade can't stand the chance of being cancelled...

Rev has a point....after I posted I was thinking "you know...these damn insurance companies will try ANY way they can to get out of paying for something". So they might try and screw you after the fact. But in all my experiences with bike insurance they've always went by the book....and anything extra you added...for speed or looks...didn't mean squat. Its all about the stock value/performance. Thats why you could prolly get a Triumph which is cheaper to insure...turbo the hell outta the thing.....and have a bike faster than anything on the street and still pay less for insurance than a Busa. Its a crazy world out there

In my experience, liability premiums aren't affected by the type of bike....just the minimum liability coverage your state requires. In Nevada, I pay the same for liability on my Busa as I did on my 1986 Ninja 1000R. And the bike before that ect. Hope this helps

Most insurance companies are all the same on this one. Your rates would go way up.

i insured my turbo, the pistons, rods and every thing else related to the turbo $12,000 my rate never went up just got to keep copy of all reciepts...

Well, yes, in response to liability insurance, the insurance companies pretty much dont care whats on it because they dont have to pay for it anyway. And the reason this type of insurance is so cheap is because you cant create nearly as much damage with a bike than you can a car or better yet a truck, (which by the way I pay 1500 a year just in liability). Although, then again, flying down the road at 220mph into the back of a car could have sort of a bullet effect I suppose, but Id rather not think about that.
The main reason I brought the topic up is because I am thinking of fully insuring everything after I install the turbo kit and get it custom repainted ect. But I have a feeling this may not even be realistic for my budget, especially after forkin over the cash for the turbo.

BTW, does anyone have experince in dealing with Powerhouse motorcycles in New York? Thats where I bought my stage 1 Hahn Turbo kit. It cost me 3400 shipped which was the same price Hahn Race craft themselves were selling it for. I was just wondering, because this is where I plan on getting it custom tuned and custom painted...........aparently they do it all. They sound like a good company but I just wanted to check. Also any other suggestions for an up and coming Turbo Busa rider would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks again

as far as insurance companies are concerned, a turbo on a bike is simply an "accessory", just like having aftermarket exhaust or an aftermarket windscreen. They don't care about it til the day of totalling the bike, and then its all up to discussion on what the accessories you've installed are worth.

It won't raise your insurance rates because of it, unless they decide that your bike is more of a "custom" bike, IE, a lot more expensive. Risk factor wise, they only care about one thing and one thing only, and thats which catagory the bike fits under when its stock.

Wow A Turbo is like a windscreen or pipes? Cool I need the name of that company and I will change today! I am in MN and think we only ride 6 mo a year anyway (280 mile on my turbo 03 just this December by the way) and when I called around State Farm - no turbos and Geico said that if I "said" I had a turbo they would add the info on the policy then next year when the policy came due they would cancel me (same goes for extended swing arm) but if people know a "good" company let me know. I have 99 Valk Interstate, 00 road star, 03 anv busa and I pay like 1200 for 12mo.

I did have a 87 gold wing that was 87 for a year - the good old (and slow) days....

I think it completely depends.....IMO, I'm as interested in bragging to insurance agents about my turbo as I am about bragging to cops that just pulled me over.

If they ask if I've added any accessories to my bike, I'll say yes. Usually the next question is "what do they equal?", I'll tell them that too. If they ask for an itemized exact list of everything I've done to the bike, then I would tell them, but unless they ask me directly, I see no reason to tell them.

You can't be cancelled for something that they never asked about (of course, you want to read the fine print to make sure your turbo is against the contract.....can't say I've done much research on it. Motorcycles don't require insurance here)

I am always afraid about this also.... I wanna say that my rates would prolly go up. but I don't think I"m saying anything unless they ask.

I think insurance is the least of your problems if you are in afghanistan..!!!!

For me, State Farm was the best price. They do not care about turbo's/modified frames like Progressive, Auto-Owners and some of the other big carriers. (I am an insurance agent) and made sure I asked all the right questions so I would have coverage if a loss happened. For full coverage I pay $600 a year which is a little higher than other states (Michigan insurance is priced high due to unlimited PIP), anyway apparently all you have to do with State Farm is show receipts if you have a claim, unfortunately I had a 2002 Hayabusa stolen a couple years ago (but recovered thankfully) and Progressive was the worst company I have ever dealt with, I found they base total loss (such as theft) off of "NADA Guides" which is TERRIBLY under valued. Progressive was about to cut me a check for $2,500 for my flawless stolen 02 Busa :moon: thankfully it was recovered lol.

same here, just took bike to agent and he took pictures said fax over receipts and have a good day... i hve a full blown stg 3 dual ball bearing monster w bst's n all the dressing, of course its a show bike....
