Which air filter?

Wondering which air filter to go with. Bike is in shop right now for 4K service, and in the near future I would like to upgrade the exhaust and do PC and all that good stuff

. My question is, I have been looking over a couple of the threads and is it wiser to go with a K&N or leave the stock one in there? Not really concerned with the cost as much as I am with performance. Any input would be great, thanks!!

My 2 cents.

The OEM Busa filter will outflow the BMC Std or K&N.
Use one of these if you intend on putting 40K miles on it and want to save money in the long run. Expect a small HP loss, it may not even be noticeable without a dyno or track times. This is not necessarily the norm in the automotive and motorcycle industry. The OEM Busa filter is an exceptionally good filter.

A BMC race will outflow the OEM filter but it will allow more particles through it. Expect more wear on engine components and increased contaminates in the oil in street use.

Another option is a foam filter, PiperCross. I don’t know enough about it to say one way or the other for street use and particle count. I have heard good things about the airflow.

Stock filter is your best bet for now...BMC race after you do the mods

Pipercross foam filter hands down. I have used them for years on my cars, and just recently installed one in my bike. IMO the foam filters work better and through experience last longer then the cotton filters like K&N. The pipercross flows great, and doesn't allow the same particulates through as the BMC race. I send oil samples off to a lab for analysis and it doesn't show any abnormalities at all and I have put about 1000 miles on this oil and on the filter.

I am looking into a full exhaust mod from brock and airbox mod. etc. anyway when i went down to their shop and talked to the guys, they said by far stick with stock.

OE will give you more protection but make sure ou keep buying new ones when it gets dirty. a very dirty OE filter is alot worse than (breathing wise) a dirty K&N/BMC/Piper...

I switched to the Piper street. Put 500 miles on it and decided to check it when I changed the oil few days back. I had dirt particles on the inside of the filter. Yes, they were trappedin the oil of the filter but with only 500 miles I would not expect that much on the inside. Makes me wonder how much got through.

I cleaned it and oiled and will check it at another 500. If it looks the same I'm going back to OEM. GL.

The only way to see how much dirt got through is to do an oil analysis. I send samples out every 500 miles on my bike and every 3000 miles on my car. I have the Pipercross race filter on my bike, and my last analysis didn't show any abnormal deposits or wear that could be attributed to excess ingestion of dirt.

Race does mean race.............its a high flow filter for race use, recommended cleaning is 1500 miles for the race and every oil change on the street. If you need more protection get the street version. Was it installed properly? Yes people do screw up that minor task all the time. If you want a street filter send back the race..if you purchased it from me. No questions asked...

Good to hear if something changes let me know. Pipercross wants to know anything that can make their product better or the best....

I use the BMC race, i like it. I've also heard great things about pipecross's product. I think if i didn't already have the BMC, i'd have gone for the later.

If you don't mind "please" share your results of the bike oil lab results . The Hayabusa engine certainly has it's own DNA signature when it comes to wear metals and other things and I would be most interested in reading your Hayabusa lab reports / lab results .

Just copy and paste the below with the numbers from the lab results to the side of each .

Iron
Chromium
Lead
Copper
Aluminum
Nickel
Silver

Molybenenum
Boron
Magnesium
Calcium
Phosphorus
Zinc
Barium
Antimony
Silicone
Viscosity @ 100c
% fuel

Some labs abbreviate the elements  and if thats the way your lab does things no problem . Just use the abbreviations they used and I'll get it into readable context .

If you have a scanner , that would even be better yet . Then you could upload the entire report as it was sent to you that would include service time of the oil along with miles during that period . Many labs are emailing JPG's of the reports thats easily uploaded and hopefully your does as well .

If you have lab reports " trends " from the same bike before the new filter that would be interesting to see as well .

I don't have any lab reports of when the bike was stock. I bought it used in stock trim, and put about 10 miles on it that way, then started modding it right away. The pipercross filter has been on the bike pretty much since I bought it. I am doing another oil change here in about 300 miles, and will be sending out a sample for analysis. Once I get the results back on that one I would be happy to upload a scan of the information. I could most likely upload a comparison, of the first 500 miles, then the next 500 miles.

I use Blackstone Laboratories for my analysis. They have fairly quick turn around time, and the sample kits are free (the analysis cost 22.50)

Sorry I missed your post.

I know race means race which is why I ordered the street version on your companies recommendation. Read my original post a little closer. Not saying it's a POS... just providing my personal experience to date. I can verify that it flows more over OEM... had to adjust the A/F as she went lean.

BTW Saying your would switch it out no questions even though I don't need it shows the support you offer your customers

Thanks for the reply and offering to share your results. I am quoting a previous post .

For the time being and until you get the 300 miles ridden and the newest sample sent in , would you mind uploading this particular report ?

Thanks
