Wyotech?

I have a step brother that is ranked #3 in the country with Yamaha. He went to mmi and competes in mechanic competitions and attends all the training and certification seminars.

Let me be the first to tell you what a retard he is. Sure, he may know how to follow a book, but natural mechanical instinct escapes him. MMI is a waste and your best bet if you want to be a mechanic is to just do it.

I became an electrical engineer and job security is much better. My dad is a motorcycle mechanic and times are tough.

I agree with all of the above. I would recommend staying with a service. Before getting out of the Corps, talk with the Army and the Coast Guard. I work with some coasties and they seem to have a pretty good job. You will never be deployed to a shooting environment and still get decent pay. You should be able to pick your job in either the Army or the Coast Guard. I would change MOS to something that you really like, now that you have seen many jobs in the Marines. For example, a Gunners Mate in the Coast Guard fixes and shoots guns all the time if thats what you like. The Corps is a good stepping stone to another job in another service. Good Luck.

I agree and don't agree with you bro. Its possible to do an interservice transfer, most people just dont know about it. If he switch over the Army and his MOS does'nt crosstrain he will lose a stripe, but he will pick it up shortly if he's PME complete for his rank through the Corps. The Coast Guard is not guaranteed not to get shot up or blown up, I saw them patrolling in the Tigris river in Iraq. Another thing is since the coasties are Homeland security or even back in the day, a former Marine still have to go back to bootcamp for the Coast Guard. The Army on the other hand you just roll over and go a two week indoctrination in Goergia.

Amen!

Hate to say it man, but I think they are right. You should definitely try and avoid the trade schools. Here is an article that came out in todays New York Times:

in-hard-times-lured-into-trade-school-and-debt: Personal Finance News from Yahoo! Finance

Here is something else you might want to check out:

I am a Vet man and let me tell you, times are seriously tough. Think long and hard before you get out and definitely before signing up for any trade school. I went to a trade school and found out the hard way that the credits are non-transferable. I cannot use them at any university, because the level of education you receive is nowhere near the same level. :banghead:

Absolutely the truth. Well said!

If you decide on college and work hard while you're there, you'll have something that nobody can ever take away from you.

And in four years, the economy will have rebounded, and you'll have your choice--maybe even in the industry you want. Usually, the best time for college is when the market is terrible.

Good luck, and thank you for your service. I hope Uncle Sam pays for a good education, since you've earned it.

my education level is pretty low, im more common sense smart then book smart.

then you're waaaaay ahead of the curve...

as most folk ain't even smart enough to know they're dumb.

at least your "Self-Aware" and not just another..

"Dumby In Denial"

and i fuly understand the part about how you don't wanna turn a hobby you love into a job you loath..BTDT.

good luck whatever you choose..Semper Fi and L8R, Bill.

I would stay in and go back to school at a university. This will help you move up in rank and help you get a better job when you retire from the Marines. I have several friends that have gone to schools like MMI, graduate and don't even use their degrees.
