Yard Sprinkler Problem

Seen the post on Landscaping and thought I would ask for a little help/advice. I have a sprinkler system with 5 zones. Worked like a champ for the past 10 years with a few heads "yard bird" I think is the brand replace here and there. So, this year I turned them on and went though the zones and realized I have one that was low pressure so it seemed. Just replaced the entire head 1st since they are $1.79 at lowes and then it quite completely. Dug up around it and no leaks and when I pull the entire head it will run water very good. Walked the yard and looked to wet spots and I don't see any and thus why does this new head not spray? I replaced it with a 2nd since I had a few and still nothing. That area is covered by two other heads so I blew it off. Then a few days later I pass one that is on the other side of the yard and a different zone and noticed it was leaking around the head where it is supposed to pop up but with out the system on. What gives? Don't know! It was an old one from years past so I replace that 45 as well. Still seeps with system off and didn't help at all. Swapped it twice and the exact same seep as it comes through the pop up like it's just about to pop up but again; without the zone or any zone activated. Advice please. I figure it's all to do with low pressure on one and to much pressure on the other and then if so I don't know jack about what is under that green lid thingy! LOL

Who winterized the system for you?

under that green lid thingy are your valves. You may have a valve going bad. I'm not sure but I think you can manually open the valves to check the system.

Look at diagram here. Irrigation Helps & Tutorials - Anatomy of Irrigation Systems
You can manually cycle the zone by putting your finger up in the valve box. Doesn't matter what zone it's currently on. With your finger push up inside there and you will lift the valve and cycle the zones. Check each one like this.

Check under green lid to see if there is water or leakage present.
My guess is it a bad valve box and it's not opening or closing all the way.
This is why one zone is strong and other is weak. Some valve boxes you can service some have to be replaced.

Blow it out myself every winter before the 1st freeze and 10 years with no problem. back drain it from the basement as well. Just strange to have this issue now and think it may be the control valve if that is what they are called in the main unit that feeds the zones from the back yard.

Thanks much. I guess I'll need to get to understand this thing and try to test them. I'm betting one does not let enough through to feed the last one in zone 4 and maybe does not close off enough to feed my zone 2 which is just about 3 feet from the valve or main control unit.

Blanca, this is perfect. I'll run this to ground tomorrow and check it out. I appreciate as always all the knowledge from the ORG. Many thanks! :beerchug:
