ZX-12R HP

In Ft.Lauderdale this morning I met a person with a ZX12. He said he had it dynoed down at Blaise Cycle in Miami. Bone stock 1100 miles. 164HP
I had my bike dynoed at the same place last summer. A 99 busa with a Yoshi pipe. 161HP.
I don't see why this guy would lie and I'm sure he wasn't. I do know that they are Kawi fans down there, What do you think?

...tinhead's Busa w/ air box mod and 7000 on it miles did 158.6 hp at Marcus and a new stock ZX12 w/ 600 miles did 1.8 less right after w/ same dyno and operator......I see no reason to not believe one would out pull a Busa...

The problem with reporting figures from dyno runs is the correction factor, and what it the standard it's corrected to (DIN, SAE, STD, etc).

If you take my bike on the dyno, I can report figures that are 6 hp off of SAE correction (both + and - numbers),so the correction factor really makes a difference.

Then we can talk about just what type of dyno the runs were on (DynoJet, Factory, Superflow, etc). You simply can't compare #'s between different types of dynos.

Motor Cyclist reported 156 corrected hp (again I did not see the correction factor listed in the article), so I would tend to accept that number. Sure each bikes hp is different, but 10 hp is a bit much.

Anyone going to have their bike dynoed (especially for a shootout and/or $$$) needs to take the time to ensure things are optimal. I'm not talking special spark plugs, wires or any other stuff, just basic things that are overlooked by some.

Drive chain.... Just cleaning your chain thoroughly in kerosene and then lubing it can show a difference of 2-3hp (my old YZF1000)in back to back dyno runs. If the chain has many miles on it, the difference in power can be even greater due to wear.

After cleaning and lubing your chain you need to adjust it. The stock Suzuki adjusting blocks are somewhat inaccurate for real accurate adjusting. Put the bike up on a race stand and after adjusting the chain to the correct amount of slack using the swingarm marks, spin the wheel and see how freely it moves. Now, tighten or loosen only one adjuster a 1/4 turn. Spin the wheel, is it better or worse? Repeat this until the rear wheel spins the most freely. Sometimes a 1/4 or 1/2 turn is all it takes but it's worth the effort.

What's your rear tire pressure? Keep your tires at the maximum recommended pressure or you're increasing rolling resistance. I've seen bikes on the dyno that have had rear tire pressure 10-15 pounds lower than recommended. Most of the time the owners had no idea they were low or kept them this way claiming the bike "rides smoother", etc. It costs you power either way.

While you're back there monkeying around, how are the rear brake pads doing? Much drag? After miles are put on there's a chance your rear brake pads could be hanging up slightly due to dirt/contaminants in the caliper. The pads could hang up on the pins or slide areas or maybe the pistons aren't retracting fully and are hanging up a bit.

Friction's the enemy. Fight it and know your dyno figures are what your motor's really delivering to the ground.

The four horsepower difference could easily be a faulty correction factor or comparing your SAE HP to his STD HP. Like comparing grapes to watermelons.

Top HP doesn't really mean that much on the street and perhaps roadracing. A flat torque curve is more functionally useful to a street rider. I would like to see a torque curve comparison of the two bikes.

BTW Thanx for the tips Warp. I would add setting the TPS, syncing the throttles, clean and gap the plugs, clean air filter and
clean oil all have made a measurable difference in rwhp.

Is it at all possible that this was a good running Kawi? If the Busa varies 5 - 10 hp from bike to bike, I would think the Kaw would be the same. We have all bought a vehicle that was a flat out dog out of the box the same as we sometimes get a rocket that seems to run too good for what it is. I for one, am not about to think that all Kawis chase cars. As soon as you do, one will bite you. Just my .02! Jack
