So my wife had a motorcycle accident scare today. She's fine, no one hurt but it brought up an old standing topic for me. How do we get away from the jackass motorcyclist label?
Here's what happened. Wife was coming up on a turn into a parking lot on a narrow two lane. While waiting, a big ford from oncoming lane came up ready to turn opposite way. As is very common here, both vehicles came to stop, looked, and turned at the same time. Unknown to my wife there was an older Harley rider in the passenger rear corner of the truck. When the truck began the turn, rider gassed and took tight shoulder around truck. Wife braked hard and just missed him. Ok so accidents happen right. Here's where it gets good.
Older rider actually came around block to come back and cuss wife. Said she needed to be more aware of motorcycles. Now I agree with idea that drivers should pay more attention but here is what he didn't know about my wife; she a bike fiend. Loves to ride passenger. On top of that, she has on more than one occasion driven chase truck for rides. She was even following me once when I went down. Wife knows how to watch for bikes and traffic flow.
I understand how a lot of riders feel and how passionate they can be about idiot drivers. I know I have been mad plenty of times for the too young girl talking on cell, chewing bubble gum, and trying to exit the McDonald's.
I just wonder if some bikers tend to think that just because they are on two wheels that everyone else should cater to them. Personally, I ride like no one can see me when there's traffic. It's the city, not a closed course. Don't motorcycle riders need to do their best to improve the negative image, not cuss drivers who were actually paying enough attention not to run them over?
