This was all military at one time, and there are quite a few barracks still here.
These barracks are all part of Fort Cronkhite is a former US Army post that served as part of the coastal artillery defenses of the San Francisco Bay Area during World War II. The soldiers at Cronkhite manned gun batteries, radar sites, and other fortifications on the high ridges overlooking the fort.
There are also numerous tunnels here for ammunition storage
These army barracks were occupied all that way up until 1974.
Coastal gun emplacements that once were manned year round were replaced with NIKE missile sites. Barracks in the background are the same in this 1959 photo as my pics.
This is Angel Island, which is only reached via a ferry.
You can hike all over the island and there's lots of historic buildings. It used to handle all the west coast immigration. Kind of like the Ellis Island of the West Coast.
Jim came over from Nevada, and Phil is from downtown San Fran, all he had to do was ride a couple miles over the Golden Gate Bridge to reach us on his Aprilia RS660
Tire inspection before every ride: Leaning the 200 way over.
We're riding up to Mount Tamalpias, this is a mountain top that overlooks San Francisco. Fun to come up here on a clear day, if you can get up here on a day when there's no fog. The ridge in the center of the screen capture is how we got up here.
Make sure to come up to the top of Mount Tamalpais on a day with no fog. Looking down on San Francisco Bay. The tiny island is Alcatraz.
