Round Mountain Rd is literal. It's a road that circles around a (low) mountain. It used to be really goaty, but it was recently repaved and is very sandy from all the trucks, but smooth. All the oil wells are here.

Then it's off to ride Highway 178 Kern River Canyon. Also literal, we're headed up a narrow river canyon.

One of the best unknown roads around. Super fast and super fun!

Rides the canyon wall above the river and mostly single lane.

Highway 178 on the left. We're on the opposite side of the river.

Headed into the Walker Basin

These mountains are the very southern edge of the Southern Sierra Range. Other side is Mojave, Edwards, Barstow, China Lake and all the military bases in the desert.

Why I've got EBC Extreme Pro pads. ;) Come around a hairpin at speed and this...
Don't know who was more surprised. Free range cattle means exactly that- Free Range.

Breckenridge Rd is one of my favorite deserted single lane ranch roads, but it's super dry this year which is a bad thing.

What a difference two years makes: Breckenridge in April 2019:

Wet and dry years come and go, but I'd much rather see bright green.

Prefer it when it looks like this:

At the top of the range is a fire lookout

A new day dawns and another day of wandering. I wanted to ride the Highway 395 corridor along the Eastern Sierra Range but rain was predicted and that meant I'd hit snow when I tried to ride over the Sierra Range back into the Central Valley so that idea got nixed. Next time. Couple more cool spots I want to check out along the Highway 395 corridor.

So instead I headed into the mountains and hopefully avoid the rain.

Sierra Range in the distance. That's where we're headed.
