2021 Pashnit Touring on a Hayabusa

SQF Lightning Complex Fire burned nearly 175,000 acres, roughly 273 square miles.

Took this shot in my front yard of the sun in middle of day when that fire was burning.

Then: same road, same place pictured here

Good news is Highway 190 is just as twisty as always. And totally deserted.

Trucks are for crews still cleaning up 10 months after the wildfire.

Ever try to re-create photos? I do.

This photo showed up in my Dec'20 issue of my Road Runner magazine.

Hey I know that exact corner. Great shot in the magazine. Harder to re-create in real life. Different time of day, different cloud cover & lighting. I'm going to take a tour group to this exact corner on Hwy 190 above Camp Nelson and try to get this shot with a couple bikes.

Fiddling with the GoPro7

I've been using this same hand-built flexible RAM arm since the GoPro Hero 1 came out 6 bikes ago. Sourced all the individual parts off the RAM site and built two of these. A single one works best.

But I find shooting video off the bike is a huge pain in the ass. I much prefer photography. I've coupled the phone with the GoPro app and run the camera with the phone. No need to push buttons on the GoPro <anymore> or even use the wireless remote.

Hwy 190 has many switchbacks

I finally figured out to set the GoPro7 to shoot 30 second length video clips of twisty sections, then let the GoPro app make the video but still getting used to this thing.

The touch screen and the menus on the actual GoPro7 are useless. GoPro app makes it much easier to turn on-off while riding.

Finally reaching the fire line near Camp Nelson where the fire was stopped from burning into this small mountain community.

Cedar Slope above Camp Nelson lost 75% of the homes in that small mountain community in this fire.

Which GoPro are you using? The 7 and on have voice commands.

Arch, I like to buy electronics used off eBay. My camera body Sony A57 is used, the 18-200 Tamron lens is used (my last lens I used so much, it fell apart). I really beat stuff up from all my traveling and take a lot of pics so used is best for me. After a bit of homework the GoPro 7 Black seemed the best (used) price with the most recent upgraded features. And if you watch the above vid, that image stabilization is pretty impressive. You can see the bike bouncing around but the video is still stable. Microphone is much better vs wind noise from the old days.

What I want most from the video is not having to turn it on or off on the camera itself. So downloading the GoPro Ap and connecting via Bluetooth on the phone has solved all those issues from 10 years ago. In the olden days, you'd hit a 20 mile section of twisty road and just let the camera run & I'd end up with 700 photos and 3 good ones.

It's hard to convey just how twisty this stretch of road is, likely one of the curviest roads in the state with minimal traffic.
