GREAT INFO!! Guys, I will have to read this again before I purchase, some will get a PM if I have additional questions about the gun you suggested THANKS!

lets say I wanted to purchase a gun for protection like from Walmart.  Is there some type of license I would need? or can I just get it and they would have to check my background for 3 days or what?

It's state to state and even county to county (at least in Fl).

If you don't mind me asking, what kind are you thinking of. I used to part time until very recently at a local gunshop. Firearms is another passion of mine. Maybe I can help your decision a bit.

weel cool from the link posted, seems like I can go out now and get one. And thanks Justyntym, Just anything will do, I only plan to use it once. Thanks for the information.

Hey Boosta,
Guns are kinda like shoes: they all do the same thing. So, having said that it's best to find the caliber and model that YOU shoot well and fits like a glove. You mentioned protection. What kind of protection? Home? While you're on your bike? Something while hunting? It's very important to define "protection" because that will define the caliber and style you choose. Don't just get the cheapest thing you can find (aka Jennings). Sorry if that was preachy, being a range officer I tend to get all whipped up about the subject.

I see guys roll out, buy the biggest thing they can find and can't hit "X" ring from 2 yards.

No guys I just wanted to clear this up before I go to work, I would never turn a gun on anyone. Thats not a way to resolve something. But only if I felt my life was in danger, and if the gun was there, maybe I'd use it.

Just for info- A .357 loaded with 125 gram Jacketed Hollow points has the highest one shot kill statistics for humans, The .45 165 gram Jacketed Hollow point is the next lethal.

Revolvers are nice cuz they don't spray brass everywhere. However, a semi-automatic pistol is hard to beat in terms of capacity and ease of use especially the "fantastic plastic" Glock in a .40 or .45.

Just DON'T get the .357 MAGNUM ammo.  Way too much recoil and unneccessary velocity for any close quarters self defense situation.  Especially if you have to fire more than once.

I carry an H&K .40 S&W USP Compact myself.
12 rounds and just small enough to conceal (I have my concealed weapons license).  .45 only has 8 rounds and the .40 is considered just as deadly with proper ammo.

I carry a H&K USP .40 compact and loaded with Corbon rounds it has more energy than a .44 mag. I also cary a Kel-Tech P3AT (.380) for back up. It is so small it can fit in the front of your jeans pocket without being noticed and holds 7 rounds.

i have had everything from Kimber to Springfield and I got to tell you that nothing shoots like the H&K. It never jams and is always accurate for me. It is a little on the thick side for summer carry but it can be done with the right holsters.

Another really good small gun for carry would be the S&W .357 model 340PD. holds 5 rounds and weighs 12 oz. It is very compact and packs quite a punch. Just hold it carefully or else it will cause quite a sting in your hand.
