Any ideas?

It was a K&N filter.....it wouldn't screw on....OEM went right on without a hesitation..

Never again will I use a K&N oil filter.
You never know, I've even heard of OEM filters changing manufacturers, maybe K&N did the same thing and didn't get it quite right for the Hayabusa. I like aftermarket parts but there's an inherent difficulty in matching fitment to a kazillion bikes and that doesn't exist with OEM parts.
 
When Kawasaki changed the oil filter from being made in japan to being made in china, I started buying all the japan filters i could find at the time. This was about 5 years ago. I still have 4 japan filters left.

:laugh: I was afraid to mention Kawasaki but that was the example of OEM filters changing manufacturers that I heard about. It was discussed on ZX14ninjaforum years back. Other owners were doing the same as you, hoarding all the Japanese filters they could find! I never heard there was a problem with quality or fit of the Chinese filters but it makes you wonder.
