Backpacks and high speeds don't mix

You'd figured I'd have learned my lesson from a few years ago... well, coming back last night, I saw some hellacious lightning, so hit the throttle on a few straights coming back. I ended up getting pelted by heavy rain, but got home only to notice the top pocket on my backpack unzipped and the contents mostly empty.

I managed to retrack my route and by lucky chance, the first place I was able to stop, I started finding stuff. Got my mp3 player (cracked in half), my watch (bands separated and display cracked) and my camera (SD card missing, case crushed, gives power failure warning and shuts off).

On the bright side, this stuff is all a few years old and can be replaced for half what I paid and get better features (got to love technology these days).

I am just lucky I've been keeping my hard drives in the main bag. I would have been so screwed if those had flown out.

So this is just something to keep in mind if you are carrying anything else besides you and your bike and decide to hit 150. Let's see if I can remember this lesson this time around and not be walking up and down the road looking for things a few years from now.

2 Words - Tank bag....

EXACTLY...

Or if you zip your backpack, always make sure that the zippers meet at the bottom... I would presume your top pocket had 2 zippers, one from each side and you had them sipped up... Air comin in would rip it open f thats the case... otherwise it shouldnt have happened!

But good advice! thanks for sharing!

I recently purchased the Ogio No Drag from a fellow member here and it is very nice. The zippers are not on the outside and the straps are U-shaped instead of V-shaped which makes the neck much more comfortable.
No chance of the zippers opening.

I just need to stop trying to commute with it. It's not like I'm saving gas... since I can't kick my adrenaline addiction.

I've seen tank bags do that also. Modern day bags are pretty good, but a few years ago we had to look for wallet, phone, etc for a bud. His tank bag zipper was in the front :Oo: and of course the wind opened it up.

The No Drag backpack is made with pockets to hold a laptop and has a extra helmet carrier hood. I use this to go to work and back everyday.

just make sure you zippers are all pulled to one side and if you have any doubts put a clip between the 2 zipper holes. I weigh 270 in gear and have run mine redline 6th gear with a bookbag multiple times with no problems so you should be fine

About 2 months ago the GF and I was heading out of town and saw somones backpack rip and go between the back tire and hugger and locked the wheel up and the guy layed the bike down. Lucky enough I was heading out of town with my dual bike trailer and only had one bike on it. I stoped and loaded his bike up and took the guy home, we were only about 20 miles out of town. The tire actually got a half dollar size hole in it from skidding.

 Way to go for stopping I'm sure you made that guys day. :beerchug: What the bike stretched or something odd it would have fallen fast enough to get in between the wheel and hugger that quickly.

No problems hauling my stuff in these...

the bike was near stock ZX6R and one strap broke loose and just swung down to the right and under the hugger.

That lightning last night was pretty awesome, wasn't it?! A perfect excuse to run triple digits to beat the rain to the door.

I've had similar experiences with my backpack and the zippers. So far it's only happened twice and I was lucky enough that I didn't lose a thing.

This is the third time this has happened over the past 10 years. Usually just me being too tired and not thinking straight. I've been able to recover most items, but this time, everything I recovered got destroyed.

I swung by again during lunch today and manage to find the SD card that was ejected from the camera... well, some of it anyway. Just got the front plastic cover, the rest of it I am sure is destroyed beyond usability.

Oh well, it was time to upgrade anyway.

Don't use the backpack much anymore, but when I do I always make sure those zippers are completely zipped and the zipper is locked down. Lessons learned. Luckily I've never lost anything. Use it mainly for transporting oil and filters for the Busa....

My back pack has multiple pockets but they are on the inside to separate stuff only 1 zipper on the outside an I make sure they zippers meet at the bottom:thumbsup: Sorry for your loss

Wow, hard to believe you found anything! That's great. Happened to me once....still don't remember what all was in that pocket.

Sorry about your loss.

It was one heck of a light show.
