Man. All that matters is Cap is OK. This passion of ours is an exciting but dangerous one. The thought of our friends in harms way every day is frightening, but we ride regardless. I guess that's part of why we can call it a passion. Heal, up, Doug. Way to survive, buddy
hey cap...hope you heal up well and soon...also?..i'd like to share with you that just 2 weeks prior to christmas of '01?...i had just about "EXACTLY" the same sort of accident...45-50mph...just casually cruising along back home on my '00 ZRX1100R.....an older minivan driver....pulling out of a sidestreet from my right...to make a left in front of me...and?...looked right through me with about 10 yards grace and lurched right out in front of me...fortunately?...i had a gut instinct and was glarring at his front wheel with my front brake covered (as always) and crushed the front brake the moment i saw his front wheel rotate forward...with my ZRX's rear wheel float'in about 12"s in the air?...upon impact I perot'ed off the right side rolling my right shoulder into the minivan but caught the sideview mirror to the ribs...then my body flattened out against the drivers side door and everything went black...seconds later?...i regained consciousness to the sound of my HJC helmet grinding on asphault as my head rolled to the side...then opened my eyes to look straight up and see my ZRX standing straight up just above me...as i thought..."Great...now it's gonna fall on me and i get crushed and burned by my own bike"...but it never did...as the front wheel had lodged itself inbetween the backside of the front tire and the wheelwell much like a bicycle stand...the drivers side front door of the minivan was jammed shut and couldn't be opened as it had been crushed closed by the impact of my body...and there's not a doubt in my mind that the foam in my JR Pheonix jacket absorbed a fantastic amount of the impact as while i had no broken bones?...just about every muscle in my groin/abdomin was torn...and my right shoulder was pretty much shredded (soft tissue wise)...got a shot of demerol and sent home with a months supply of percodans...and i hadta baby my right shoulder and always sleep on my left side for about the next two years...also?...for a good two years that followed?...I'd have a tendency to "flinch left" anytime i saw a cage coming out of any righthand sidestreets.
Point being?...anybody....and i don't care how many years you've been riding...anybody...can get caught up in "an unavoidable" by any one of an infinite amount of brain-dead cagers out there...but you did great man...wore your gear and it paid off in spades...and like me?...you get to live...with no broken bones....to ride again.
Thanks for being there for us all cap...and if there's anything I/we can do?...to keep you "being there" for us?...you name it...and/or we'll do it...enjoy the drugs and?..
Always expect THAT car to pull out across your path.
Sat. morning I came around a sweeper going about 80-90 and some dumb f**k redneck in a pick-up truck is stopped in the middle of the freaking road talking to another guy facing the opposite way in a truck on the shoulder of the road to his left. Grabbed a handful of front brake and luckily, there were no cars coming the other way and I simply went around him giving him the WTF is wrong w/ you gesture?
If a car(s) had been coming the other way I would have had to either squeeze between them or experience about a 10-15 mph impact into his rear.
Oh man, never like hearing about a brother down. Heal up soon Doug. Thoughts and prayers sent for speedy recovery for you and Family.
Thanks for making the right choice on wearing gear.
