Changing Oil

Ya, I think its better to change your oil at 500 miles during break-in like the owners manual says.

Changed my oil at around 3 miles then again at 500 miles. You want to get all that crap out of the engine as soon as possible. Stick with dino oil for the first 1000 at least. If you can aford the Busa you can aford 4 qts of dino oil.
 
No kidding! If my motor oil had a lot of metal shavings in it after just a few miles I would turn it back in to the dealer I bought it from. What does the filter do if not catch any shavings the magnetized drain plug doesn't? BTW, mine was changed per schedule and had NO shavings in the oil. After another oil and filter change I switched to Amsoil and after 22,000+ miles and multi state tours, I've had no problems whatsoever. Go ahead, support those oil companies!

Like mr Bogus said, additive packages are usually omitted in break in oil" and you really should not change it any sooner than the owners manual says cuz you might be doing more harm than good.
 
I can understand erring on the side of caution and changing the oil early during break in. However, here's a question: Are the bikes already broken in from the dealer or is the ride from the dealer the beginning of break in?
 
The bike is test fired at the plant for about a minute. Like cars they are run for a small amount of time. When I buy a new auto we change the oil after a 1000 miles to the small thing results.

There was black soot in my 100 mile oil change. There was metal flakes and bits on the magnet and in the oil pan. The black soot looked like fine ground metal on a clean cloth.

Do i think this will harm the bike? Nope...or they would be returning alot of bikes.
 
Do you guys do your own service? Went to the dealership today and they told me to come back later. Said it would be about 138 bucks. I asked why so expensive and was told they had to take the fairings off. Should i do it my self or are they doing something other than tightening frame bolts and checking cables?
This is exactly why I purchsed the package at the dealership to get unlimited oil changes for free, they are not cheap and $1,500 is like 15 oil changes, so that's why I did it...It just made sense. I'm sure I could've figured out how to properly change the oil and do it myself but I feel much better having a certified tech do it.
You tossed your $1500 away, in my most humble and experience opinion.

Save your money, don't go in for their "prescribed" services. There is NOTHING that NEEDS to be done to these bikes that you cannot do yourselves at home. The only thing that REALLY NEEDS to be done,,, (MAYBE and not even really) is NOTHING!

Re-check, re-torque and check chain slack,,,,, ALL ON YOUR OWN! Do a pre=flight,,, each and every time before your ride! Inspect and check ALL POINTS after each and every time your come back from a ride!

BECOME INTIMATE WITH YOUR RIDE! It IS your life you trust to it every time you go out isn't!? Would you trust your bike to someone for a price because it was the easy way out?

For $1500,, think of all the things you could do to personally inspect, improve, modify or customize yourself, for cryingoutloud!

For one,, if you do NEED to take your bike into be serviced in a major way,, remove your own panels so that you have no one to blame for scratches,,, except yourself!

Change your own oil and filter. Re-use your original and current O-ring,,, because oit loves the way it was seated,,, and have peace of mind knowing that YOU were the one that tightened the drain plug and not some idiot that may or may not have tightened too much or POTENTIALLY stripped the threads out doing so on a bike he couldn't care less on!

$1500,,, not trying to bust your chops here,,, but, wow,,, someone saw you coming!

Well I understand where your coming from, but my situation is different, I will not be doing any maintenance on my bike, except minor things and I am sure to you changing the oil is minor.

My time is better spent making money then fiddling around changing the oil and taking the fairings off, with my luck I will put scratches on the bike and do something incorrectly, eventhough it would probably be a good thing to learn how to do, its just not my thing.

$1500 for lifetime oil changes sounds good to me, especially with the 6 other maintenances which includes ANYTHING that could happen with repair work, so it was worth it to me. Plus I plan on putting alot miles on this bike, and from what I can tell, an oil change can run $100+ so thats about 15 oil changes...I just felt like it would be worth it in the long run to get the preferred biker package at the dealership.

Besides, $1500 isn't much to a poker player whos blinds are $50-$100, I actually made that $1500 back that night at a casino boat in Savahhana, so to me, it didn't cost me anything...

You really need to check your bike out when you get it back from service at the $tealer. Check the oil level since your letting them fool with it, check every part of the bikes' finish. Get the service manager out there when you drop it off and say look my bike over, do you see and scratches, gouges or anything else? Cause this is the way I want to see it when I get it back.

The motors are all "run in" on a dyno at the factory.. certainly not "broke in" but have been tested for power, leaks, unusual noises.. There was a show on this about a year ago (may have even been a re-run)

I really have a tough time with an engine full of shavings... you would hear about engine failures, builders pulling scoured bearings and premature engine wear.. The magnetic drain plug on mine had some pretty typical "dust" on it when i pulled it but not a thing to indicate "major shavings" Sure it could be non-ferrous metal shavings but IME with this kind of debris, it ends up making the oil look like "pearl" paint and I did not see that either..

The debate will carry on, no one will change their mind and then the debate will go to "how to break in" your motor (usually based on 20 year old ideas on a motor with 1 or 2 year old technology) I would like to hear about the cylinder wall coating/finish on these bikes myself...

Me? I like debating about tires this week
