CLUTCHLESS UPSHIFTS.....

I've upshifted without my clutch for years 90% of the time and never had any problems what so ever. In fact if performed correctly it's sooooo smooth of a transition to your next gear...Well a friend of mine says it puts abnormal wear on the trany and gears. I said BS and we argued for 10 minutes. Whats your oppinion on this debate?

im mixed on it im sure they put clutchs on a bike for a reason..but at the same time i make shifts like tha from time to time as well... So... Ive never had a problem on any of my bikes doing so but i think id rather use the clutch anyway ...

I do it!!  and you are right when done correctly its very smooth.   i got your back on this one!!

did you make it to hooters?  i had to work.

I use the clutch off a dead stop... every once in awhile, for shifts.. (on days when my timing seems clunky)

For street riding where the throttle is not pinned, using the clutch is smoother. If you can't make a clutch shift that's smoother than a clutchless on city streets, you're not doing it right.

I use the clutch off a stop and on the 1-2 shift and when shifting down. I'm just kinda lazy I guess. I'll use it also if I'm going hard and fast up thru the gears. I think that is how and when it might be hard on the gears but drag racers do it all the time so.....?

As for abnormal wear, on the Busa I would always use the clutch going from 1st to 2nd. A lot of Busas have 2nd gear issues.

But other than that, if done correctly clutchless shifting won't hurt anything.

I don't agree that the it is smoother to shift with the clutch, more convenient maybe but not necessarily smoother. That being said I don't think its practical for most riders to shift in this manner. As for the original question about abnormal wear, no it will not cause abnormal wear in my opinion.

Been doing it for years on every bike I've ever owned and on every standard tranny car I've ever owned. Never had a problem. As Charles said, if you aren't shifting more smoothly without the clutch, you're just not doing it right.

I'm intermittent. Sometimes I use the clutch, sometimes I don't. More for downshifting than upshifting.

The clutch is there for starting out from a dead stop and keeping the bike from stalling when you stop. Other than that, the clutch is for people who can not or will not shift properly.

I will say, however, sometimes, I do screw it up. THAT is what will cause problems, eventually. Not clutchless shifting itself.

Give your 'friend' a hearty 'whatever, dude'; that should take care of the argument.

If you're smooth and talented and have your RPM matched and don't grind 'em like bad coffee beans, you'll be fine... If you're a spaz and constantly find yourself making fork-in-a-garbage-disposal noises, you'll eventually need trans work..
