Deer

Let me take a minute to set up the all to scary scene....
It was about 9:45pm ish. I was on my way home which is on the out skirts of town. I'm rounding a bend to the right when out of the corner of my eye; I catch a glimps of something brown standing aside the road on the left. I peer over to see a deer standing there as if tempted to try and make it across before I get there.
This was just last week in NC. It's still summer time and that's a rarity during this time of year. But I'm an avid rider that doesn't park when most people do. So as I safely passed the deer (he desided to stay put), I thought to my self; what can I do later in the year about this. We all know the cooler it gets (Fall and Winter Months) the more deer like to move and in packs at that. So I was wondering for my self and for others what are some precautions that have been taken or heard of to keep year round riders safe from wild life? Thanks for reading and replying and Be Better Than Blessed.

HID, airhorn and pray that it doesn't happen. If it does just make your best judgment on how to minimize the situation. GSXcite (Hal) had it happen and it wasn't very good, so definitely be vigilant and careful!

You could put spikes on the front of your bike. That way he will stick to the spikes then you can carry him home and grill him. mmmmmm

But in all serious. As BigBSBusa said, HID's and a airhorn. You might be able to get some of those whistle things you put on cars that are susposed to keep them away. I don't know if it actually works or not though. Your best defense is to just keep your eyes on the road and constantly on the look out for them.

not sure if "Deer whistles" work either but the trucking company I worked for required them on all trucks.. worse comes to worse, bury your head down and hope to cut it in half on impact...

Over here in East Texas, we are required to not only put Brush Guards (Cattle Catchers) on the front of uour company trucks, but ALSO put those "Deer deterant" whistle things on there. Think they can be picked up at wal-wart and are pretty small.

We have a major problem with deer overpopulation here and alot of the driving we do is at 0200-0700hrs, so the deer are out in force!

When i asked my boss the other day if those things worked, he told me that he spoke to his body shop guy that repairs our company vehicles and the guy told him...

Lets put it this way, I have NEVER had to repair a car/truck due to it hitting a deer when it HAD one of these things on it[/quote]

So, maybe it does work!

As Ken said, I had a deer jump out of a ditch right in front of me while in a tight right hand turn. The best way to prepair yourself for the unexpected is to WEAR YOUR GEAR everytime you get on the busa. It saved my ass period!

60 mph low side into a 4"X4" metal sign post with my head and shoulder = broke collerbone and scrape on my knee thanks to gear.

15 min. later, instead of laying in a hospital I,m starting on the busa repair thanks to gear.

man i feel your concern, just this last friday a friend and i were headed home around 830pm, we were running about 65-70mph range when out of nowhere and i mean nowhere a medium sized doe ran out of the ditch 1-2 bike lengths in front of me. i got really lucky that i didnt hit her, i never saw her, i didnt have anytime to react or even say oh ****! deer are my biggest fear in motorcycling, even over cars. wild turkeys are an ever increasing problem too.

a few months ago I tagged one with my Jetta. Came around a turn and was blinded by some turds highbeams. Looked down and right so I could follow the white line. Deer came from the left. Jetta 1 Deer 0. It did nearly cut it in half, for the record. 55mph and a solid strike does not benefit either you or the deer.

That's science holmes

right where I work is the main highway. Last month a kid was doing 60mph or so and ran into a pack of deer. I guess he split the first two deer in half and the thrid on took him down. He was laughing about the next day thanks to his gear.

I hit a deer while driving a big conversion van years ago; it was a horrible experience and if I learned ANYTHING, it's that the deer you hit are the ones you never see 'til it's too late. The deer was a millisecond flash in my headlights, then the *boom* on the front of my van, cops came, etc...

I don't ride at night for this reason. I have seen deer during the day running across my path, but I know they're more prolific at night, so I opt to just not ride at night; just a personal choice of mine.

I don't think there's any way to really ensure you never hit a deer; it's just bad luck...

Scuba divers deal with sharks and barracudas. We deal with dear and elk.

Just one of the hazards.

How you know someone is from Missouri? The've either hit a deer or know someone who has. So far I've remained lucky enough to be in the latter group.
Stupid creatures are everywhere around here. Hunters kill them by the thousands every year and there just seems to be more of them the next year.
I've had many close calls, car and bike. I don't ride at night much so cross my fingers, wear my gear, and hope for the best. May look into the deer whistles before fall too.

Most of the guys I ride with in NY have the deer whistles.. They swear by them. Push comes to shove they only cost a few $$ and if they only work to make the deer stand still you can at least try to go around it. I agree with the others, wear your gear always.

In Florida, they are the size of small dogs, so you can just run right over them, no more big Missouri deer for me. Sucks for hunting though.
