did you polish the entire wheel or just the flat part of the rim. I saw a Copper Busa at the Loudon races last weekend, this guy owned a polishing shop. He polished almost every aluminum surface then he powder coated it a funky copper color, Yuck ( beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but a skunk is a skunk)
The wheels alone would of been enough. Can you send pictures of your bike, as this site doesnot post pictures.
As far as D207GP's go, attend a AMA roadrace you can buy take offs from the racers for about $25-$50 a piece. Depending on your bargaining skills, some of these tires only see practice or qualifying. This way you can smoke off you bt56's and have a ready replacement for cheap.
