Fixing oil suckage in 2003 (project for a friend)

I hope he is there with you and helping....tearing into them is the best way to learn:thumbsup:

Valve/cam cover off...(Thanks to Jinkster!)
valves look nasty and black...
and now I can't find my feeler gauges.

too many trips to the damn hardware store!

Anyone know a reasonably priced and reliable source for all of these nifty special tools:

09900-20202 Micrometer (25-50mm)
09940-14990 Engine Mounting Thrust adjuster socket wrench

pm smithabusa for the sockets...a friend of his use to make them?

Bummer = smithabusa's friend no longer makes them.

I'll post a "want to buy" but in case anyone here has one they want to sell for a reasonable price, let me know.
Working on valve clearance today - I'd post pics but Jinksters are much clearer than my amateur photography skills.

Tomorrow, cams coming out and I'll have a look at how bad the valves really look.

Question for once I get inside the engine - the manual says "decarbonize the cylinders"
- I always just wiped them through with an oiled cloth -- is there something else to be done? (these busa engines seem a little less forgiving than a 68 triumph)

Amazingly, with all the ugly noises coming from it, the valves are in spec.

If your hands don't look like this when taking an engine apart, you must be one of those smart guys who wears gloves:

Cam Tensioner off (The gasket was stuck to the tensioner...I'm just going to leave it as is)
busa002.jpg

Journal covers coming off (the far right front bolt is a real *****!)

Cams out
busa007-1.jpg

time to check cam tolerances...

Ok...small (hopefully not major) problem!

My son decided to help daddy out and grabbed the wrench and did what daddy was doing...and turned the engine after I pulled the cams.

Never thought about this before...kids do interesting things

How much trouble am I in here? If I rotate it back around to the mark am I good?

I'm pulling the engine soon and looking in the cylinders, so I've got plenty of time to sort this out...

nevermind - found the answer to that...all is well.

I'm kinda stuck right now waiting for some tools to come in. Anyone have suggestions on building some sort of engine stand? I'm going to pull the exhaust and radiator in preparation for the engine coming out, but that's boring and I won't bug you with pics...unless you really want to see them.

Question:

in the service manual, page 3-14, there is a note..

"The Engine mounting nuts are self-locking. Once the nuts have been removed, they are no longer of any use."

I assume that means I need to order new engine mounting nuts. Does anyone have a part number?

Cams are all in spec (and thanks to my favorite ex-airplane mechanic for loaning me his micrometers.)
Should have stands tomorrow so I can pull the pipes & radiator, drain oil, and get everything else ready for dropping the engine. Still looking for advice on an engine stand, but I'll just make something with 2x4s most likely.

Anyone know how much an empty engine weighs?

Most guys just use 2 X 4s , etc. and tear them down on a table / work bench. Probably not a whole lot of weight empty.

i am folowing this with interest..please keep pics comeing as i am going to be going through my motor this coming fall:)

i hope your boy is buying plenty of beer for this project. sounds like you've got your hands full.:thumbsup:

Mr. Matt will enjoy beer for life, whenever we are in the same place, and beer is available, and drinking is appropriate. I beleive those criteria have been met once in the last 20 years.

Not much to report today - stands assembled, bike up in the air, and oil & coolant out...

I'll get the exhaust and radiator off in the next day or two, and assuming tools come in I'll drop the engine this weekend.

I can't wait to hear the engine is dropped. The only thing better will be to hear you found what was causing the death rattle. The bike should not sound like a carnival midway BB machine gun. I may not be a mechanic, but......I do that that was bad.:beerchug:

Radiator and oil cooler off - a couple of observations:
1) two of the four mounting bolte were sheared - this assembly was just hanging there waiting for a bump to fall off. Not sure if this is from abuse or just weak bolts, but I'd advise people to check them in case there was a batch of weak bolts used. Bike is a 2003.

-I was able to back out the broken ends with patience and a smalll vice grip. Glas I didn't have to get an ez-out for this.

2) when disassembling, for anyone using this thread as a guide, the bolts on the bottom end of Oil Hose #2 (as referenced in the service manual page 53) are just about impossible to reach. I removed the top end bolts and waited to get the bottom ones off after removing the radiator/oil cooler. I plan to re-install the bottom end of the oil hoses before re-attaching the exhaust on reassembly.

Exhaust off tomorrow I think.

Well I found out where some of the noise was coming from...
Exhaust was loose, and I think the exhaust gaskets are missing - I didn't dig for them but I didn't see them right off...

Just in case you don't feel like spending $$$ on tools you'll use one time - check into Auto Zone's tool rental program - Basically, you put down a deposit for the price of the tool and get your money back after you return it - I got a 36mm socket to move the back wheel from them - saved mr. jaegermeister there a few $$$ - they don't have everything, but they have a bunch of engine building tools.
