Fixing oil suckage in 2003 (project for a friend)

Just in case you don't feel like spending $$$ on tools you'll use one time - check into Auto Zone's tool rental program - Basically, you put down a deposit for the price of the tool and get your money back after you return it - I got a 36mm socket to move the back wheel from them - saved mr. jaegermeister there a few $$$ - they don't have everything, but they have a bunch of engine building tools.
 good to know because i am always flying to sears to grab a tool in the middle of a project.

Well...I'm 2 steps from removing the engine - just waiting for the tool to come in (hopefully Monday) and you will all have pictures of a pretty bike with no engine!

I learned from a forum that the head of a hex head bolt, 16mm I think, can be used as the 22mm allen key to remove the front tire. Now that was a moeny saver. A $1 bolt versus a special order tool. Just use it with a pipe wrench.

Matt. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. I have joined the newbeetle.com forum and I have begun a thread for my transmission project. So far, a great deal on a Bentley repair manual....only $90.....instead of the $110-$140 I was seeing. Anyway, gonna log the whole thing. Funny that I will tackle a car problem, but not the Busa. Must be a potential speed & exposure to external objects at speed thing. Wish me luck.:please:

send me a link - I have never done a transmission beyond changing the fluid - but I'm sure the Miata will some sort of work done at some point.

Well I found out where some of the noise was coming from...
Exhaust was loose, and I think the exhaust gaskets are missing - I didn't dig for them but I didn't see them right off...

Holy Crap Batman :poke:

All that work for an improper install on a pipe :banghead:

nah - the exhaust is only part of the problem - low compression in cylinder 1 and oil in 3&4 tells me that the noise may have been amplified by a loose exhaust, but there is a broblem in the valves or cylinders.

Thought I'd give you guys some more pics:

1)organized chaos - yes I know where every piece is...

Bike tucked away for the time being.

Can someone help me identify this? I'm sure I'll find it on re-assembly, but it fell out when I lowered the engine, and I didnt see where it came from.

...and the head is off....

headless engine...

Question 1: are those valves done for or can they be cleaned and rehabilitated?

Question 2: never seen metal shavings in that loaction - any guesses where they are from and what to do about them?

I am guessing that metal cylinder that fell out and was beat to hell was the source of the death rattle. Also, put on some boots or something. Don't lose a toe in your flip-flops, Bro. This is the best day of your journal so far. I hope nothing has been found that redlights this project as prohibitively expensive now.

Been looking at schematics and brainstorming on that loose part. I am leaning to some sort of collar that fits around a shaft, like the gear selector, then in a hole in the frame??? But it is beat to crap. Wish I was there.
