Foster Mom to a breed I never thought I'd help...

Around here, that's what we'd call a "slow learner"

Hey, when the ONLY dog to ever bit me was a Pit Bull, what do you expect? I don't fear snakes or lizards, dogs, cats and their claws...the Pits have always scared me and for good reason. I am admitting NOW though that this experience with Luke has been a very positive one. I'm thankful he came in to our lives and that I can do my part to help him find a better life :)

Looks like a great dog.

Stephan, don't make me sick Luke on you

He's been a lot of fun...I'll admit though, having a dog again is like having another toddler in the house but this one hikes his leg up on everything...oh wait, that's just like boys anyway

Update on life with Luke...

I love this dog more and more each day

He crated very well yesterday, but I felt the crate was too small...no accidents, so happy to see me and the kids :) I grabbed a Dane crate from the ex for him and he was quite happy. He even went in it himself last night and slept like a baby.

This morning he was tethered for a bit so I could get ready, and he just lies in the yard looking at the neighbors' yellow lab pup. He just wants to play, but I can't exactly explain that to the neighbors LOL He did give me a scare as I was getting things picked up to leave for work and the bus stop. I took his leash off and he opted to head off the deck and started a good trot, probably to the yellow lab's yard. I panicked, my boys both went running after him and all I thought was that this was it, he was not coming back, he may really scare someone, who knows? I yelled "Luke! NO!" and he stopped cold, cowered down by my gate and waited for me to walk over. I have NEVER had a dog do that, EVER! He listens very, very well and impresses me more each day.

I wish I had a dog run or a huge fenced in yard that would keep him in, protected...he crates well, his house-breaking is going well (have to watch him closely, but he doesn't do it if you catch him hiking his leg)...I really would keep him if I were equipped to do so, but he deserves a home where he can run, get lots of exercise, etc...

He's not eating as well as I'd like. He didn't eat yesterday morning at all, then in the afternoon he ate about 1/2 of what I offered. He's drinking well, so I'm trying to not worry too much. This morning, I got his food out, he sat there and looked at me, seemed more content to love on me than eat, so I sat on the deck for about 15 minutes just rubbing his head while he laid in my lap. I've never had a dog turn down food, but I'm hoping he'll eat more tonight. He needs to beef up...

Just thought I'd update the gang...he's a keeper!!

He's not on the injections for treatment...vet thinks he's a good candidate for a different treatment given his current state of health, so he's on a big round of antibiotics and HeartGuard, which over time should kill off the heart worms. I haven't ever had a dog that gets sick from that, but perhaps he's just not strong enough yet to eat a lot...

We did find he LOVES these, and only a few...

May not make him sick just a little upset stomach, so he may not eat much at first.

This does not need to become a reason to fight or point out your stance on the breed, but I can safely say no one fears Pit Bulls more than myself. I never chime in on the threads discussing 'em because I have very little to add. Only dog to ever bite me, completely unprovoked and while NOT on the dog's property, and this was a family pet...just always had a huge fear of 'em since that day, but I digress...

Woke up today to an odd call for help...no details, but a Pit Bull needed a foster home fast, so with my connections to vets and friends that foster and know who might be able to help, I agreed to take him with an hours' notice. He's been with us for nearly 12 hours now and let me say this, this guy's not had an easy life, of that we're sure, and he's the most thankful dog I've ever met.

He's already seen my veterinarian and here's his diagnosis:
Ears chopped up and infected...

Heartworm positive...

Ulcerated eye...

Cut tongue...

About 20 lbs underweight, ribs showing...he's 71 lbs now and could easily carry 90 lbs (he's pretty damn big to me and I had Danes)...

He's got arthiritis in both rear knee joints...

Not neutered, marks everything including other dogs LOL

He's maybe 2-3 years old...

So, he's already been crated and is OK with that, been for a ride to the vet's office, no issues...he seems to not mind cats, is great with kids (so far), loved the vet's female Bull Mastiff (maybe too much)...I'm just fostering him right now; I'll admit, my fear of the breed really keeps me from just taking this guy in, but we're doing all we can to make his life easier. He's on antibiotics for everything, heartworm meds, dewormer, got all his vaccinations today, including rabies...he's good to go and tolerated every test possible without a single growl or show of aggression. I've got feelers out for anyone that rescues these guys. He'd not be kept at the local shelters; they put them down immediately which is kind of why he's in need of foster care right now.

Anyway, my kids had to give him a name because calling him Dog just wasn't fun...so, here's Lucas (or Luke) and as you can see, didn't take him long to enjoy the good life...

What a great story!

It's truly touching to hear that an unfortunate pup has come under the care of someone that is genuinely working to help him through some very real problems while also avoiding certain fate that would be found elsewhere.

I also, in spite of being a dog and animal lover, have a certain caution when dealing with pit bulls. I applaud your desire to help the pup in spite of your fears. Your behavior is an example of the best that humanity has to offer. It's nice to know that there are folks like you doing deeds such as this for those in need.

Well done!

I salute you  and wish you, your family and the pup the best!

Thanks MMG...I'm no hero, I'm a sucker for ANY animal in need...ask my ex, he HATED that about me. I try to save everything...

I love animals more than most people; they all deserve a good shot at a great life :) I'm finding that fostering is pretty fun, and tiring...a close friend does it and perhaps that's what I should try to do more. I don't know...just me rambling :)

I wish I could run a rescue shelter for dogs, but Dennis is allergic and living on half acre in a housing development isn't a good place to start one. Give Luke lots of hugs for me. He is such a sweet looking dog. Glad he has been a very positive experience for you! :cheerleader:

Ours both stay crated all day while we are at work, then out all night. They like to lay around & be loved on more than anything.

Thanks for the update.

see, we told you that you'd keep him. pits are awesome. how much are you feeding him? he won't eat as much as a dane. our 70 pounder only eats one cup in the am, one in the pm.
Eagle Pack Pet Foods, Inc.
you feed them half as much, they get better nutrition, and poop less because more nutrients are being absorbed. less filler.

I'd guess the few times he has eaten, it's been about a cup, maybe a bit more. He's on puppy food right now because he needs to get his weight back up to a healthy weight...I'm just watching him to make sure he does eat. I don't want him getting weaker...

My Dane did that too...Luke seems perfectly content to be crated and at night he sleeps better in there...

Thanks for the update. Sounds like you and Luke are doing well together.

If the food you're feeding Luke has corn glueten try a lamb and rice food. It's easier to digest and he'll gain weight by feeding him 1-1 1/4 of a cup twice a day of adult dog food.

When I got my dane from a rescue he was 105 pounds. He weighs 165 now so you can imagine how he looked. He wouldnt eat much but on the advice of a local breeder I made him chicken and rice and that got him eating well.

Buy a whole chicken and split it between the dog and your family. You get the best pieces...ha ! Take his portion and boil it for an hour or so in a large pan with a lot of water. Then remove the chicken, remove the bones from the chicken and put the meat and skin back into the same pan. Add the appropriate amount of rice to the pan. Boil for twenty minutes and then divide the finished product into several plastic containers. Freeze all but one. Everyday add a handful of the rice/chicken mixture to his dry food and watch his appetite return. Sure worked for my dog and it is very gentle on the stomach.

My first Dane I got from rescue and she also wouldn't eat. I talked to a few different breeders and they all recommend moving her to a raw diet. She loved it too. I would split a chicken in half for the day and she would eat that. I do mean a whole chicken though, bones, liver, neck, etc. I was also helping on my friends hog farm and during butcher time I would take the bones with meat on them and give those to her. Plus I would make this veggie stew for her to balance out her diet. She went from about 75 to 120 and the best part was she had almost no waste coming out the other end. Unlike what little dog food she ate before would multiple in her stomach some how and then come out the other end in greater quantities.

I had one when I was younger and it jumped up and bit me in the rib. My dad made me get rid of him. His name was max and to me he was awesome. Dad didn't think so though.
