gotta ask (Busa Good First Bike?)

WHAT EVA I HAVE HAD MY BUSA A YEAR I'M 26 260 LBS ARMY ONLY DIRT BIKE EXPERIENCE AND I HAVE NOT LAID MY BIKE DOWN YET!!

I bought mine last May and it was my first street bike.....first bike of any kind since my KX125 I sold in 1987. I had ridden on the street probably a half dozen times in my life. I have put 7600 miles on it since 05/08/05 and haven't even had a bobble. I just make sure every time out that I respect the bike and expect the people around me to try and kill me. So far so good.

May as well wear this topic out... I rode street for over 12 years before getting a Busa and I rode dirt for 5 years before riding street. I wouldn't recomend a Hayabusa to a first time street rider. Riding dirt is cool but the trees and such aren't trying to kill you like the SUVs out there are. It makes for good skills but not necessarily the street smarts you'll need. I get 18 year old kids and high schoolers come up to me at car shows (with either of my vehicles) and I tell them the same thing. Start small, if it's your dream to drive/ride something this fast, you have to start slow and work your way up. If you don't, you'll kill yourself before you are old enough to truely enjoy this hobby.

might want to start a little smaller like a 750 which is still capable of good high speeds and drivability reason why i say this is because like it or not everybody has a day they are feeling punchy which might put you in over your head real quick the busa goes to high speeds real easy and will push over 100mph before you realize it and rides so smoothe you want even know your going that fast

Me 17, 1st bike Hayabusa!

... canIdream?, like you, I rode bike when I was young. Just placed a deposit for the 2006 Limited, waiting for delivery, in about three weeks. There's been lots of advise, an essentially, this is my first bike. I am 6'5" 230lbs, so other than Cruisers or Touring, the busa is my only choice; but I actually love this bike.

I ocassionally ride a Suzuki 1000, but ocassionally. My maturity (age 45) and level headiness will be my thought to not get into trouble. Taking it easy and being patient, not being too eager to do more that I am able is what I am counting on myself to do.

The beginner rider safety course was a great help as it gave me a lot to think about BEFORE finally making the decision to buy the busa.

Be yourself and get to know it. I know I will...

I am 22.I bought my 06 black busa as my first bike barely a month ago and so far im at 700 miles or so.So far no drops,no crashes and all my limbs are still attached to my body. Will i still be in the same situation a year from today? I honestly dont know. What i do know is that i never ride ANYTHING over the speed limit or try to show off.I never ride with other sportbikers who fly at 150 Mph and i have spent too damn much on this bike to be reckless with it.If you have no riding experience then you might need to look at this thread here.It will tell you a bit about the reality of certain things.Although i must tell you i personally have had dirtbike experience so i knew how to work the clutch etc.

just adding my $0.02, you will more than likely have more fun with a smaller bike as your first bike. I bought the Busa after years of riding and after several bikes, a cbr600 was my first. I then bought a ZX10. I didn't respect the bike. In return, the bike did not respect me = took a spill.
I had much more fun riding the 600 b/c I could control it better. I ended up riding faster in the cbr than on the zx10. I was riding with a group of zx10s, zx11s, and was always able to keep up with them on the twisty back roads.
After I got comfortable riding, I progressively got the bigger bikes to match the ability to handle the bike with more power.
Today, I ride a cbr929rr, busa, and a Yama Warrior bored out to a 110 ci.
Take your time and work up to a larger dsiplacement bike over time and experience. There are a lot of smaller bikes w/ truly impressive preformance/power.
Best of luck

Hey, welcome to the HOG...first of FORGET ABOUT "keepdreaming..." don't even mind to that.......... I start ride since 1978, went through many bikes, and some says, don't have to go thru all that...life is short...etc.etc.ok then, get yourself one, my ques is "How many times will you not forget what you are riding on top of."

here is one i have wanted a busa since 99 but i kept my old zx9r around so i could get used to street bike had it almost 4 years then moved up to a busa

I've ridden mini bikes as a kid, and had my Katana 600 for 3 years. And I'm STILL very leary of my new acquisition.. As long as you've had at least SOME street bike experience, I think as long as you remember that the bike COULD KILL YOU IN A SECOND, and keep that level of respect, I think you'd be OK with the Busa. But if you've never been on the street w/a bike at all, I'd say no go as the first bike- One panic move on the throttle and you're either sitting in the car in front of you with the other passengers, or you're ground chuck.

Remember one thing- You only get one quarter with this game..

CID, I feel on the love at first sight.....I bought a busa as my first bike. Some of these guys are right, it not the bike that hurts you....it's YOU. I took a motorcycle safety course to get reacquainted with sportbikes. Always remeber what the Busa can do and DON'T take it for granted.

PS. I'm also in the USAF.

I had the fastest production bike when I was 22 years old GS1100E I survived. If I would have asked the same question back then I would have gotten maybe all the same answers.
like dont do it its to big to fast start smaller. Thats no fun.
Now Im 44 and after riding the busa for a while sometimes I think I might have been better off with it when I was 22.
Just use you head when you ride. You can control the power of this bike all ya got to do is ride it.
This thread...makes me laugh, to our members? some of'em are kind of overwhelmed about a new riders jumping on a busa...some says its a fate I say karma...wheather we said its no good or not he is going to get one (that's what love is...
something impossibles come true, that's a power of love isn't it folks?) also, he knows bout the fundamentals of motorcycling....so it is now in God's hands no more no less...why don't we just warm welcome for him and share some thoughts and advise to a new member huh? show him some love...

you dont have to learn how to control the bike on the streets, you need to learn how to use a bike on the streets. Dirt and street are two different ball games. All the common sense in the world... still cant rack up next to experience. You need to experience the first crash, the first quick stop encounter, the first object flying out on front of you.. etc... and build enough experience to be able to get out of emergency situations. smaller bikes are more forgiving... the busa is not so much. I would say start smaller... need to get used to riding on the street before you take the big dog out.

Welcome to the board! I too am new here, but not new to bikes. When I was 21 I walked into a dealer and had NEVER rode a motorcycle. He talked me into a FZ700. After 3-weeks I felt as thought the bike just wasn't enough... not that I was a hotdog, but it seemed "small" to me. I walked into the dealer and luckily he was a nice enough guy and allowed me to trade my FZ for the full price I paid for it toward a Honda 1000F... which was the bike I wanted in the first place.

When someone tells me they are looking at a 750, I suggest to them that they should look at a 1000 if they can afford it. For most people, you'll get more years of enjoyment out of a larger bike. Buy something to grow into, not something that will need to grow into you... if that makes sense!

Either way... good luck and ride safe!

way to make someone feel welcome here.

Don't pay any attention to that canidream. It's a good question and you deserve a good response. I personally think some people just don't like to see anyone else buying a hayabusa for some silly and vain reasons that I won't go into here.

My thought on you getting one is definitely do it. You can kill yourself on any bike from a rm250 to a hayabusa. You know your limits and what you are and are not capable of. You should do what your heart tells you to do. One either falls in love at first sight at the busa or does not. If you have, then buy one as soon as you are able. Life is too short to deny yourself of dreams. Live the dream I say.

Welcome to the board !!
You make some good points Kerberos, but most important of all is that it's your decision to make, Canidream. Since you're asking for opinions, here goes:

You learned how to ride already, so I won't mention that part. I also won't mention the Motorcycle Safety class because I think it's something that every rider should complete.

I fell in love with the Busa at first sight too, but like you I think that i'm "mature" and level headed so instead of buying a Busa I bought an old 650 as my first street bike. Then once I had the "rules of the road" down (like the fact that you're invisible on the road, and everybody is out to kill you) then I borrowed sport bikes and got the feel for the riding position and techniques. And after a couple years, THEN I got my Busa. I don't love her any less because I waited. If anything, I appreciate it that much more because it seems like so much more of an accomplishment, rather than instant gratification. I earned it.

Kerberos is totally right, you can kill yourself being stupid on any bike, but on a Busa it's easier to accidentally lose control and wreck even if you're not being stupid due to the massive respect that the bike demands.

So, if you're really mature and have common sense, then I think you already know the answer to your question.
