GPS tracking for sons car or On Star

I am wanting to find something for my sons older car.

he will be getting his license soon and we are giving him my 91 camaro. Not my first choice to give a 16 year old, but he is pretty level headed and the car is paid off so it is the best option and close to being the only option at this time.

With that said, I really like the On star system where if the vehicle is in an accident On star is immediately aware of it. plus I would like tracking capabilities. I trust my son so I am not wanting to watch his every movement, but I would like to know where he is if he is late to somewhere.

So the above is what I am looking for, below is a long explanation as to what is leading me to look for a GPS tracking system, more venting I guess than anything

This week was not a good week for out town, a guy I know, whom I have sat around and talked about our kids with, lost his son Sunday night in an accident.

he was 25 years old, a twin and he was engaged two months ago.

real good kid. He lived in Los Angeles. He came up this last weekend to visit his dad for an early fathers day. On the way home Sunday night driving on a two lane road, some azzwipe decided to pass an old van. right where there is a fricken bridge and a river. The only fricken river on this road for miles and the guy decides to pass.

Hit my friends son head on at 95mph. killed himself and my friends son.

He caused the van to go into the river.

My friends other son happened to be a few minutes behind his brother and came up on the van in the water, he knew there was an accident but didn't know his brother was involved, he got the people from the van out of the river.

he called his parents and told them there had been a bad accident and a van was involved, he still had no idea his brother was involved (guess the other vehicles were out of site, it was at night)

so this happened at 8:30 at night. The parents were watching the 11:00pm news and they were covering the accident and they saw their sons car on TV as one of the vehicles in the accident, the contacted the police department, and when they drove down to the PD they were told that yes it was their son and he had died in the accident.

This was Sunday, then Tuesday 3 kids who had just graduated from my sons high school last week died in a car crash.

The car was found at 7am (I think wed morning). it had crashed and all three teenagers were dead.

They had gone to a local gaming casino the previous night to pick up job applications, they were not drinking, they were not speeding, apparently the driver was not familiar with the road and just didn't negotiate a turn.

We talked to a lady last night that works at the high school (my wife knows her) and the three teenagers had called her niece the night of the accident and asked her to go with them and she told them no that she had just got home and didn't want to go back out.

Any kids dying like that sucks, but from what I understand all three of these kids were really good kids, one had a full ride scholarship to the local SU.

The father of one of the three teenagers killed on Tuesday works at the same place as the father of the 25 year old that was killed Sunday night.

It is not like we live in a real small town, but I guess it is small enough.

My son has finished his driving school, has turned 16 and I am taking him down next Tuesday to the DMV for him to take his driving test. I don't think I am looking forward to this next step in parenting, having my teenage son driving.

I am at the same stage in parenting. My son got his permit and (never thought I'd say this) THANKFULLY he got a D in school so I don't have to let him get his license. He is a good kid and very level headed but he drives like he rides - the gas is either on or off. I joke with him that we should get rid of the pedal and just install a switch.

He is slowly coming to the realization that it's not a video game and bad things can happen.

With my son, very level headed, good student, pretty much has his act together, but dayum if he doesn't think he knows everything when it comes to driving, and couple that attitude with the FACT that he doesnt watch what he is doing or the cars around him.

And when his mom or I try to criticize him about him almost running a stop sign, or pulling out in front of a car that is traveling ohhhh I dont know 35mph and he (my son) almost gets hit, he gets all defensive.

I just got the car out of the shop yesterday because the speedometer wasnt working

He asked me why I put it in the shop to get it fixed, he told me he didn't need a speedometer.

I told him that when he was driving, especially just starting to drive he needs to know how fast he is going so he doesn't get a ticket.

His response was "I don't need a speedometer, I can judge how fast I am going"￾

I am like DOAH!! I have been driving for over 30 years, and I would trust my guestimate when it comes to possibly getting a ticket for doing 5 mph over the speed limit.

This is something to think about and I know this from a personal experiance On Star does not allow you to track your car nor will they release the car position to you they will ONLY give that info to a badged officer and if you do not believe me just call and ask them yourself. IMHO On Star is good for if the car got into a wreck that is a Plus but for tracking get a GPS sytem installed if you want tracking capablity

http://www.guidepointsystems.com/index.shtml has a system you can shop out and get for around $450,  is not "crash" sensitive but does allow 24/7 location ability with subscription or theft activation at no charge..  Retail is around $750
Thanks for the link,

Was kind of excited about it, then I quickly lost interest.

I looked for a local dealer and the closest dealer was 132 miles away

I called the company and they said I could not install it myself I needed a dealer, they gave me the number of the dealer I found from their web site, apparently the only one in California.

I called them up, after being passed around to 3 differant people I was passed to a mechanic who informed me they were a motorcycle shop and didnt do cars, then he hung up.

Other than that, it looks as though that is what I am looking for.

Right now I am considering this

This probably won't help much; just throwing it out there. I know that the GPS-enabled Blackberry devices can be used for 'location tracking'. I don't know about a stand-alone Blackberry, but in the Corporate environment (read: running Blackberry Enterprise Server), location tracking can be enabled and then using 3rd party software, the GPS location of the device can be tracked.

Based on your son's comment about being able to judge his speed, I understand your concern. My best to you in this endeaver.

Oh - the Blackberry software will display real-time, speed, too!

(My Son's been asking for a Blackberry...I think when he starts driving, he'll get one! LOL! I already run my own Blackberry server at home...no problem to start tracking him!)

I already have Verizon Chaperone service which allows me to locate his phone (all my kids phones) it also provides speed and heading.

But I kind of wanted something additional for just the car. The phone can be turned off.

my daughter is gonna turn 16 this april. IF we get her a car I will def. be doing the same thing. She's NEVER mischevious or disobedient but would still like to know exactly where she's at.

OnStar is good for unlocking your car, and roadside assistance, but they will not help you locate the car in any way.

I actually had a group buy put together for this system ($425) and not a single taker... (I had to become a dealer for the unit) The unit can be installed by a chimpanzee in about 15 minutes..

I figured I could install it, heck I can install just about anything but the person at the main support number told me I HAD to have an authorized dealer insall it and pretty much would not help me any further.

I figured if they were going to be anal about that issue, then even if I could get a unit and install it myself I was thinking they probably would not allow me to activate the service.

IMO they are making a bad move by being so uppity about who can/could install the unit... shame too as the unit does work well and the service pricing is decent.. they are just trying to run a "price control" gig... (foolish with the internet today I think)
