how fast do you ride when with others?

(jjmetheny @ Jul. 15 2007,20:18) I usually ride by myself so I don't have to listen to other people whine about how fast and unsafe I ride.

(LCB @ Jul. 15 2007,15:54) I ride my ride - at my age it's not too much fun for me to be riding someone else's. I couldn't care less if I'm the last one to get to the meeting place 'cause I get there in one piece and without any points on my license. Don't get me wrong - I've exceeded the speed limit once or twice or maybe more... but I'm not going to jeopardize life as I know it just to keep up with the rest of the bunch if it makes me uncomfortable. That's when accidents happen and the last thing I want to explain to my family is how stupid I can be. They're pretty sure they already know the answer to that one - I don't want to prove them right!

I stay @ the speed limit and behind! First guys never get the good girls! She's always in the back! Think about it?

I don't consider myself a fast rider. But I do like to crank it up even in a group. The one thing I make sure of though is that I know where I am going and where to meet. But it really depends on the group. When you have more than five people riding together I have noticed that the groups usually breaks up into specific speed and skill levels. So you may have 3 guys that are burners and 2 that are slightly or significantly slower. As long as YOU ride they way you want and know where you are going everything is cool. That being said: I will depending on mood, condition of road, type of traffic on the road and weather condition go as fast as I think is safe. Which can mean never breaking 80mph or hitting 160+ consistently. Just ride within your skill and comfort level regardless of the groups riding style and everything is cool.

I ride what feels right for me and only me...if the gang wants to ride ahead, that's cool...if I feel like riding with the gang I will, but I don't like tickets, don't feel up to paying the outrageous VA tax fees that are now on the books because of speeding and I have 2 young sons that would love to see Mom return from a trip out with the Busa gang, so they keep me sane and remind me of what's most important in life each time I ride...

Ride within your limits always...live to ride another day

Well, specifically, my situation goes like this: a lot of the guys who I've been riding with are younger, and I'm beginning to realize that they view their bike as more of a penis extension than something to do for fun. When I ride with them, I'm ALWAYS in the back, and they wind up losing me because I refuse to ride triple digit speeds in traffic, at night, and on twisty roads with sprinklers hitting them.

One of the guys I ride with and I had a discussion about it, and he was like "but you have the fastest bike in the group." Sure I do, but it doesnt mean I have to ride it like i stole it everywhere I go. Additionally, my wife rides with me on occasion, and theres no WAY im going to put my safety AND her safety at risk to keep up with a group. the wife said something about it that kinda upset me. She said "I bet you that at least one of those guys is dead or crippled for life by the end of the year." Given the experience level of some of the guys I was riding with, I'm afraid she's probablt right.

So now I find myself riding with these guys a lot less. Ive been doing a lot of solo riding, and will probably continue to do so until i find folks who ride more like I do. It just isnt worth it.

I usually ride with a bunch of young military guys on Thursday night bike night. There is always a fresh bunch because most are just here for some type of special training. There are a few local fellas who lead the ride and have pretty good skills and also know the roads. There are some fairly good curvy roads on a couple of the routes and I ride just hard enough to keep my headlight in their rearviews which gives me ample opportunity to react if they should go down. I find that I still have fun and even get much respect because they all have this weird impression that the Busa can't turn.

I have actually shown up at the meeting spot and not ridden because of the talk I heard pre-ride and have turned off and headed home because of what I saw during the ride. No one has ever said anything to me about doing this, and I am still here riding my pace.

i ride alone most of the time...when i am riding with a group i tend to take the rear spot especially if i don't know the people i am riding with...the only time i will ride in the middle of a group is if i am with people i know and TRUST like GSXcite, omslaw, Red05, BusaWhipped, DR1300R, GSXTacy, and MC Mustang to name a few (looks like the only people i trust in this world have come from this board

ride alone most of the time.I am a mood rider.I don't hit just because I have a busa.[Hit it meens 150+]doesn't matter whom I'm with.I don't hit it just because someone else does.I ride what I wanna ride,if someone else don't like it[too fast or too slow]go ride with someone else.everyone should ride the pace they are in the mood for.somedays I'm fast, someday's I m slow.My fastest twisty rides have been by myself.rode with a guy my daughter went to high school with.showed him some new twisty roads.when we hit the straights I left him.he didn't care.when we got to the twisty's,I waved him by,then he left me.I didn't care,we had a blast that day.boy!!! that Buell xb9 handles better than anything I ever saw!!!he could make that bike dance!
I guess mood means how I feel at the time.If you don't feel like busting a turn hard, then your limits are down,so slow down.Damn I,m getting old.

Busafett, thanks for starting this awesome subject line! I'm trucking my Busa to Laguna Seca tomorrow (Tues morning) for many days of riding with people I've never ridden with before (including many org Busa riders)....and I'm concerned!
I'm a good rider, love speed and have an incredibly fast and capable bike....but often we have an internal tug o war between "all the sensible right stuff" and our egos. Reading everybody's comments shows the incredible diversity of attitudes and styles even on our Busa site......mix in a bunch of riders 20-30 years younger on 600's and 1000's in twisties on RACE WEEK and I'm really in for an internal tug o war!

This is very valuable, thank you again. Raydog

I'm always the slowest one, usually getting there after everyone else and I don't care... although I DID overtake and pass a lady on a bicycle about half way down the Dragon Sunday! My philosophy is getting my bike (and me) back in the garage at the end of the day just like it was when I took it out that morning.

Seriously, though... on group rides I find it's best to agree with the group that people who want to ride fast can ride fast, people who want to go slow can go slow, and everyone will wait at the turnoffs so nobody gets lost.

My biggest concern is that if you leave someone behind and don't wait for them, you won't know if something went wrong and you won't be able to help them pull their bike out of a ditch, or worse, you won't be there to call 911 for them if they can't do it themselves.

Ride sensible, ride safe, don't pass in a no passing zone, ride within your means and skills ALWAYS. Get an open space where I can see ( and everyone else in the group can see) and I can be known to crack the throttle a bit.

I ride with friends on sport bikes, I ride with my 78 year old father on his trike, my borther on his Harley, and another brother on his 1980 GS450E. We always have a blast. It is the riding, not the speed that we do this for. Hang back, enjoy the view, breeze, sun and simply relax.

For me, that is the best way to ride in a group.
