InfiniteReality's Gen3 Build

What happened with the plastidip? Did it peel off the top layer of paint when removed or something? I've used it a few times on random things, not sure how I feel about it. It's an awesome way to change things up without being permanent, but I think I just suck at painting in general so it's never come out great for me.

The key with dip is to use the sprayer, comes out WAY better than rattle cans. It self levels so makes an beginner look like a pro. The stuff is really easy to use and very durable. BUT now that it definitely has the potential to screw up Suzuki paint, won't ever use it again on anything with remotely good paint.

It did not peel the paint, after applying it caused the paint to crinkle. I noticed this about 12hrs after spraying the dip, was the 4th dip and all have been done identical...even down to the day of the week (always pull apart friday, spray saturday, assemble sunday). I honestly thought/hoped it was only the dip that looked like that....but when I peeled it, it was heart breaking.

I still post this video in comments on DYC videos when I think about it.... like now, lol.

That's wild! It looks like it had a chemical reaction just like paint stripper causes. Do you think you possibly got a bad batch that wasn't mixed properly or something? I would be pissed!

I asked same question about a bad batch, but DYC claims they've never had a single issue with any of the gallons. I didn't compare it to a stripper reaction (for paint, lol), but you're totally correct! Definitely some chemical in the dip did not like the paint.

I really don't know why I didn't get more pissed about it, kind of felt like there was nothing I could do. DYC more/less indirectly gave me the finger, no support from other dippers because it's never happened to them so obviously something I did wrong.....which no one else has ever done wrong before? lol.

Probably be worthwhile to make a thread about plastidip and dangers of it, specifically on a Hayabusa.

I actually have some plastidip sitting on a shelf in the garage that I thought about trying. The paint on my bike isn't factory and is already wrecked so couldn't hurt. I would have been very curious about the results of a chemical analysis of the dip that caused your issue vs a known good batch. There had to be something mixed out of proportion there.

When I got my Bumblebee the yellow fairings were painted with black Plastidip. I peeled it off easy as you please and the paint was perfect underneath.....it was kind of fun to peel it off.....

I took a picture and sent it to the salesman I bought the bike off and he said they should have done that and charged more for the bike as it turned out really nice.

I have a buddy that sprayed the rims on his S2K with plastidip and it held up pretty good for years. He had them painted for like 5 years before peeling it off.

I've had friends spray Plastidip on their car rims and they held up really well...

I've never personally ever sprayed anything with it.

I have a cowl hood for my cadillac I've been too cheap to have painted. My car is matte black so I attempted to plastidip it just to see how it would look on the car and holy hell am I bad at painting. It looked worse than the bare fiberglass after I was done.

Definitely should give it a shot, why not if already damaged.

I dipped the bike 8x and on 4th is when it happened. It was a black base coat and Top Coat with hypershift pearls, a fairly typical dip.

When I did peel it and see the crinkles, I had no choice but to sand those smooth and already planned to redip it. I do not recall if it did it for all 4 of the remaining dips, but it definitely did it at least one more time after a dip. Same spots. I think it's more to do with the clear TopCoat they sell than the dip, but total guess.

I've also dipped my old white '10 Raptor. It was still on the truck when I sold it. New owner kept it on there for about 3yrs before removing it. I went back and looked and it was on the truck for right at 5yrs.

At this point my main issue I just can not paint to save my life. I attempted to paint the inside panels that go around the dash area/under the clipons and I spent hours and hours prepping them and it still came out like trash. That was my test to see if I was capable of sanding/painting all the fairings and I learned that is just not a skill I posses.

I will probably just wait til I have the bike back together then buy some china fairings.

I really like that blue on your old raptor though, sharp color!

Is this a GM catalog? If so do you use it exclusively or do you use many color palettes?

This color catalog I was using seemingly was all the 2020 colors for most all manufacturers. My paint guy is one of the head painters at a Chevy dealership. The color chosen is a GM color though, not because I'm a GM guy, but was best match to the pipe. I did compare Ford, Hyundai, Land Rover and Chrysler/Dodge, but that was it. I did not ponder on the color much, found a handful of them and narrowed it down because I know I can spend hours and hours trying to decide on a color, when it won't really matter as much for trim color.

Finished little stuff of exhaust up and ready to start without muffler if I had my headlight...I left the harness attached since I hardwired the relay..

New brake line installed on the ABS pump. Took an easy 30min of trying to get it started. Finally gave up, did something else and before I shut it down for the night tried one more time and got it

Removed bolts that can be seen once bike is back together and did a little Sharpie work to and reinstalled.

Kick stand installed. Seats arrived and look even better in person. The little dip in the center it was unexpected, but is my favorite part. I think it'll make the Gen3 styling better.

I think I have all hardware (that can be seen when back together) now black for each side. I'm sure I missed at least one thing but will fix when done.

Hopefully get the rear wheel, caliper, etc back on tomorrow.

Realized my hands are kind of tied at the moment without the trim. Decided to make an inlay for the rear cowl. Took several tries and getting close to a good fit. May try to find some matching pearl white for it.

Had a hiccup with test fit of the wheel. Spacer in the cush drive is too long so they won't go together snugly. Took off a couple mm, little at a time until it closed. Only took about a dozen tries, was timid about not going too much although I don't really know if a spacer this small is really needed between the bearings. All fits now, but shut it down for the night and test fit wheel tomorrow.

Paint guy has things prepped, spraying Monday. I'm guessing Tues or Wednesday I'll get them and start buttoning it all up.

And alot of fiddling, finally figured out had to rope the caliper mount with abs sensor ring. Wheel can't go on unless not be attached to the wheel prior. But now that all is good, rear of the bike is too low, lol. I knew this could be an issue since min could drop was listed at 1.5", 1/4" lower than front. I wish I'd cut the the turnbuckle bolts down prior, but had to try.

I think I'm calling it early this evening and ess with it after work tomorrow, then install wheel.

Hopefully with the turnbuckle maxed out finally and at lowest setting it'll raise it enough to get wheel on at least. I also have the spring on the rear shock fully extended too. I think a shorter the spring it'll raise the tail (need to Google) so between doing both I'll have adjustments both ways, hopefully.

Got stuff in for bottle mounting. Still needs color for tank but will do with chain guard and bar ends are going satin too. First mount didn't have screw holes thru the bracket so won't work on this swing arm. I know many people run, but just doesn't seem super secure. Found this one last night, definitely will be 100% secure down there plus 4 solid mounting points drill and tapped into the arm.. 3d modeling a template for drilling holes since there's an offset for half the holes. Also padded holders unlike majority of them.

I've always wanted air suspension on a bike, that would be a valid use for the bottle and project down the road.

Kinda glad no trim yet, getting close hit without it don't feel rushed to get things together.

Didn't do anything at all this evening, but did get pictures from the painter. Promise he's a better painter than photographer. I don't think I mentioned it, but along with the blue trim the gas lid surround will also get painted Pepperdust.

Had issues finding the paint code for the white, he has to call store tomorrow. He seems confident they'll be able to get the formula, but I know how my luck goes so if needed they'll end up Pepperdust as well. Not sure how I feel about it, but they won't be chrome, lol.

Probably the lightest tinted lights ever, all got 1 coat and cleared. It seems pretty pointless, but, to me it dims down all the internals of the lighting (reflectors, red lens of brake) just enough that there won't be a harsh transition to the lighting.....if that makes any sense. As a bonus, I can polish and wax it with the paint, it won't yellow and barely hinder the light out.

No chain guard today like tracking said, maybe tomorrow or probably Wednesday and can get stuff to powdercoat but it's nothing that will hold me up.

Hadn't heard anything from the welder, time to start asking around again. I forget I can't really ride until that's welded, need to get on it ASAP.

Zero Gray DB low profile hybrid in dark smoke is finally due in tomorrow.

I got lucky and picked up a new pre-order jacket from a fellow member selling his 42. Feel fortunate to find one and can't wait to put it to use......this fall, I live in humid Louisiana so lighter gear the better now.

Didn't have much time, but wire brushed fork bolts and Sharpie them. I'd may have painted if I had any self etching primer left. Need to find a black replacement axle nut.

Dealership that installed the plate mount just twisted the wires together and taped, with blue tape. Now soldered, taped and braided loomed.

ZG Double Bubble Hybrid M1 in dark smoke showed up today, but no chain guard.
