It finally happened

While I'm at work if there is a lack of things to do I like listen to the radios.  Every now and then you hear some good stuff.  I think the funnies thing I ever heard was one night when a maintenance crew got lost.   THIS WAS NOT DELTA.  We would never do this.

Plane: We would like to taxi back to ramp 5.
Tower: Taxi approved Hold short on the East end of Taxi way Baker.
Plane:  Hold short East end of Baker (when you taxi you have to repeat what the tower told you to do so they know that you know what to do.)
short radio silence
Tower:  Plane (real name not given) Which way are you heading?
Plane: We're going to hold short at East end of Baker
Tower:  WHICH WAY ARE YOU HEADING? (tower not happy at this time)
Plane: To the East end of Baker
Tower:  LOOK AT YOUR COMPASS AND TELL ME WHAT WAY YOU ARE HEADING!!
Plane: UH We're heading West.
Tower: Hold short at your present location and we'll get back to you.

At this point they left the maintenance crew out there for a few minuets before they called them back.  Once they finally called them back the crew blew it again.

They missed their turn off to ramp 5 and had to call the tower back.  That went over big time.  All the tower could say at that time was You guys are really testing me tonight.  The next voice you heard from the tower was a different controller.  I think the first guy went for a smoke break.

Maintenance guys in the cockpit, not surprised!

I am 53---used to hang out there in 1966-67 How did they lengthen the runway. I remember that the runway was
as long as ground area it is built on. On approch [sic] right over the road..then off the end right over houses.. Hmm.
Well it didn't get extended a lot.  Runway length is 4987ft.  I think it used to be ry24 now its ry21.  They just angled it 30degrees to the left(looking at ry21) and sidestepped the approach end about 100ft to the north.

A fellow controller here has a tri-pacer, very fun to fly in. If a little slow

I can tell you this the tower hates to hear anything that involves the words maintenance and taxi.

Whew! Glad everything's ok with you Charles.

I think Santa Monica was called Clover Field just around the time the Wright Brothers were flinging themselves into the air. (Just kidding Ralph!)

As for taxiing Jumbos, I think JW probably has some pics of what it would happen if I got in the cockpit!
