Lube Rear Chain with WD-40

Spoke with a guy who just bought a chain driven Yamaha. Said he use WD-40 on his last chain driven bike. Anyone have experiance with this application on a Busa.

I've used it exclusively for over 12000 miles and never had a problem. I saturate my chain with WD40 every 300 -500 miles and just wipe the chain thouroughly after every application. It cleans the dirt and grime out of the chain and keeps the o-rings supple. An o-ring chain has the lube sealed in between the o-rings.

WD-40 is a lubricant and works fine for that purpose.

The advantage of o-ring specific chain lubes is that they stick better and keep dirt and stuff from ever getting into the o-rings in the first place, increasing chain life and making the chain work better.

WD-40 is fine, but those of us who ride in the rain near an ocean beach down dirt roads like more protection.

I personally use WD-40 to clean the chain and PJ-1 to keep it that way

Many chain lubes actually attract and trap dirt and grime rather than protect from it.
Those same lubes cause dirt to stick to the lube on the rollers that work as an abrasive between the rollers and sprockets.

You will also find that if you remove your front sprocket cover that there will be a wad of caked gunk that has accumulated.

If you use wd40, I recommend one of those automatic chain drippers/lubers or lubing it with wd40 every 50miles. I wouldn't trust wd40 for more than 50miles.

I don't know, Charles. Like I said, I've been using it excusively for over 12.000 hard miles and only adjusted my chain 3 times. So far so good.......
If you've ever replaced an o-ring chain you know the lube is captured between the o-rings inside the rollers so you're really not lubrication the chain per-say by using chain lube. The important thing is to keep the o-rings and chain clean of dirt and grime that is it's enemy.

I'm sure there are some good chain lubes if you want to use one but do be careful of the "sticky" lubes that attract dirt and hasten your chains demise.

I use chain wax exclusively. Got 19000 miles out of the stock chain. I ride rain or shine.

I usually use a stick of unsalted butter....

I'm pretty happy with PJ1 Black label.

I got over 30k miles on my stock chain.

I use K/Y for all my lubricating needs....

oh wait.. chain (slaps self in forehead)

I use chain wax, got tired of greese splahing on my undertail and making it look like crap.

Here is a good read on this topic. Look to the bottom of the artical "UPDATE: WD-40 and Motorcycle Chains".

Personaly, I use WD-40 to clean the chain and I do use the grunge brush that is shown in the artical it works great. I clean about 500 mile and coat with Bell Ray Chain Lube. It what I choose to do, it make me feel safe kind of a " Peace of mind thing" I guess.

Will I get two years of use off my chain? Who knows, maybe, but I'm gonna change it well before that so who cares what I use to clean it. Chain replacement is part of good maintenance (IMHO) well worth the $$$$. Anyways thats what I do. Now here the linker-->

Frisbee.. dont worry about it, you only need to lube it like once every 500 miles, so you have another 9 months to go..
