Medical question ~ Glass in foot I think.

Hey anyone out there in this field of work?

Several months ago I got some broken glass in my foot and assumed I got it all out since the pain left. I thought I missed a piece but wasnt sure.

Now I have sharp pains very near the same point on the bottom of my foot between the "arch" and the" heel just pretty deep. I really feel it when I press down on it or expand out my foot.

Having some contacts in the ER I had my food X-rayed but glass doesnt show up well anyway. Nothing seen in the x-ray.

I have an appointment to get it looked at but was wondering if anyone with the "right" knowledge delt with it in the past. Do they "explore" with surgury or what? The more I think of it the more Im afraid it's going to "cut" into a nerve if it is a piece of glass.

I think all they may do is make a little incision right above the spot where you're feelin the pain.

I'd be scared that it would cut a nerve too....

If this doesn't help, I can try callin my wife at work...she works in a clinic. Let me know.

I had a small sliver of glass in the same spot...the soft meaty bottom of your foot. After complaining about it for a few weeks, the doc went in and cut down and irrigated the cut to flush out the glass. Hurt like hell......

I can give you some advice I'm a nurse). If I were you I would let it work itself out because your going to have scar tissue buildup and the x-ray will show scar tissue but not clear glass. You can have them go in there exploring but nine times out of ten they won't even find it. My friend had a needle stuck in her foot and they went in pretty deep like about 13 layers deep and they still didnt find nothing. They probably woudnt find an object in someones foot even if it was silver. You can go to a podiatrist and have them go in there and dig around but just remember when your done you wont be able to walk on that foot for awhile. Sometimes its just best to let it work itself out if possible because as long as that scar tissue is forming around the area it might push the glass out but theres no telling when. It could take a long time sometimes years. Well, you do whatever you think is best. GOOD LUCK TO YOU!

Glass is one of few materials that the body doesn't naturally reject, like a wood splinter or a sliver of metal.  When glass is introduced into the body, your body will encapsulate the glass material with thin layers of calcium.  Eventually, layer after layer of calcium will build up around this glass causing a much larger problem than the glass itself.  Obviously, I would seek professional (medical) attention.  Glass will not show up in an x-ray.  And due to it's natural physical properties, it is very difficult to see directly when implanted in the human body.  Depending on the actual size of the glass, it may show up in an untrasound.  Being that this device visualizes with sound waves rather than light waves, it might be your best option.

I disagree with what you are saying and I agree with spicy, Glass will work its way out all on its own.

I know this because my mother and brother were both involved in a head on collision and for years later they both had pieces of the windshield coming out on its own. It took almost 2 yrs befor my mother finally got all of the glass out.

One costly option would be to have an MRI done. An MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) has a lot higher tissue detail than an X-Ray.

I'm not sure about it working itself out. I would talk to your Doctor about the MRI and see if it is a feasible option.

Good Luck

Thanks everyone. I see what doc says too. Im just afraid that it's working itself deeper into nerve area or poking a tendon then it is working itself out. PAC got the email too. Thanks.

Icemann, this one hits close to home except it was my ring finger. (clutch hand). While sweeping out leaves from the back of an SUV on my lot, I stuck a shard of glass way down in my finger between the second and third knuckle. I pulled it out, thought I got it all....3 months later I finally broke down and went to the doc, the wound had become a huge knot. The nurse above is right, the body starts to "isolate" the object with scar tissue. The doc had to cut most of the scar tissue out in order to find the glass, I was left with a gapping hole in my finger. It took seven shots in the first knuckle to get it dead enough and still hurt. Don't wait, the build-up of scar tissue is what made my deal so bad and the hole so big. Sorry if this is a little graphic but the point is get'er done quick...

It's amazing how many opinions and experiences everyone has had with this topic. I'm glad that everyone does seem to agree on one thing. Icemann, go see your doctor. Best of luck. By the way Ice, I stll love (and get tons of compliments on) my LED taillights.
