"Motorcycle Oil" SCAM!!

Actually, for speaker cables it all depend on the gauge.  The quality in that arena would depend mainly on the anti-corrosion characteristics.  So with that said, a 14 or 12 AWG at 75 cents / foot would sound equally as good as the $40/ft cable from MC or even Cardas.  When I was killing time on that subject, I've also read a scientifc and blind test report on that subject as well.

Sorry to say, but it's mainly pyschological rather than actual.

But back to the subject oil subject at hand:  If everyone gather around the right side of our 'busas to read the little sticker, it just say 10-40w SG classified/approved.  Nothing in there about using specifically "motorcycle" oil only.

With that said, I'm wondering if they're still running the $1.99 special at Kragen for the Valvoline and Castrol synthetic blend (regular auto)??  I'll ride down there to check tomorrow.
+1 guage of wire is the difference not the name so save your money on monster cable. i'm convinced w/ the oil aspect as well. good find!

Hey the search works good for all of us wanting to learn.
Some posts as far as 1999 are still  applicable....?
We are all on some learning curve are we not??
yes and no.... some threads are dated..

Oil technology continues year to year...
True, but oil that worked in a 2004 would probably still work now.
Also to compare the new oils, you have to know something about the old ones, to compare them to.
Oil prefernce is like a Scotch preference, (hey a new topic?) All of them work, and between the best ones it is hard to find hard scientific data that one is better than the other.

actually scientific data on oils is pretty openly available.. the problem is understanding how the data reflects on the motor... this is where all the debate and opinions come in, interpretation of the data..

But yes for the most part, 4 year old oil will work..

I have a friend that runs Diesel oil in his bike...and he has a 2006 GSXR1000 with about 20k miles on it...and he has never had a problem....anybody else ever heard of that?

I have had several diesels. Diesel oils are superior to auto oils in several ways, but designed for diesels. They have an API rating that is higher and describes them as being for engines that have more heat and heavier compression. Diesel oils do not have the range that auto oils do in the viscosity range. For example, you will not find a diesel oil in 10W40 configuration. This is explained that the modifiers needed to bridge that range cause carbon deposits in the rings of diesels. Rather it will be configured as 15W40 to avoid that. (not relevant to motorcycles) Diesel oils have a higher detergent content. Change the oil on a diesel and start it up and the oil is black in 10 minutes "“ due to the high carbon content of the fuel being washed into the oil.
I have lots of diesel oil left and would not use it in my bike. Bike engines rev a lot higher than low reving diesels. (my Cummins red lined at 3000 rpm) Shear tests etc would be different for motorcycle needs. Also the additives (which make up about 25% of oils) are different, like the high detergent.
I use diesel oil in my car, as it is closer to a diesel to performance than my bike. ( and I still have lots)

Can't believe I started this thread 4 years ago and forgotten about it. 15 minutes ago, I was doing a search on OEM air filter vs. aftermarket "performance" air filters (K&N, BMC, etc...) when I ran into this thread with a interesting title.

As I read from the beginning...

This was me 4 years ago!!! Can't believe it kept going that long!

I found this thread in a search also.
Thanks for starting it!
Oil is the LIFEBLOOD of our bikes.
I am constantly looking for updates and improvements.
I am thinking of starting a poll: Who spends as much time talking and researching about their real blood as they do the oil in their bike? There are so many posts on here about oils, it isn't funny.
I am sure we all don't worry about cholesterol, triglycerides, blood pressure, etc. as much as we do what is flowing through the journals and passages of our bikes.
Interesting topic for some psychologists?
I don't see any sites about blood or your heart that even resemble the size and scope of this site.
Really if we worried about ourselves on that level, we would not even own one of these things.
Oil is WAY more important than blood.
If my bike seized due to improper oil I would die a worse death than if I had a real heart attack?

PS: 40 years biking!

I have an 06 Bus and I use Mobile One (gold cap) 15,000 mile oil. I change it every 6000 miles and my bike runs like new.
