Need your advice about selling a bike.

Really, on any Sale with a Title Transfer I suggest you use a notary. That way, whoever signs it, can't come back and have someone else say the Bike (or whatever) was stolen. Hence, they get your money and the Bike Back also. That is if YOUR the buyer. And if he's the Buyer, and his check bounces after showing LEGAL ID to a Notary ( if he lives out of state ) THAT'S A FEDERAL CRIME along with all the State Crimes. So if you don't know him, take a picture of his vehicle with tag # very casually (have wifie do it while your showing the Bike with you guys standing in the picture  ). Then you get the Tag #, AND his Photo  . Better SAFE than Sorry :beerchug:

So far, 1 email the morning and 3 more in the last hour. She may not last the weekend.

Arrange to meet them down the road and have them follow you to your house after they show you they have the cash. Explain to them that this is for the safety of your family and that you would hope they would do the same under similar circumstances.

I always tell them it's for their safety

Having the bike out the garage is a good idea, and I would also have more people with me just in case. Having a just a phone number is not enough, there are prepaid phones that are untrakables(sorry for the spelling) I was helping a friend looking for a bike and we found a too good to be true deal, we thought it was some kind of a scam, so we end up going with 4 guys. We got there and they we also 3 guys plus the seller, so at least we didn't get outnumbered. Good luck

Meet with buyers at nearest public location and not your home. Use the nearest gas station, mall or something else with security camaras. Only accept cash and no test drives.

Meet the buyer AT YOUR BANK!! There are cameras in the bank, you can deposit your cash right away, and if some of it happens to not be real...

Why not meet them at the nearest police station? If they're a baddie, that would likely scare them off. If they show, they're likely well intentioned/nothing to hide. If they show AND they're a baddie, then they'll be in a tough spot to do anything illegal and get away with it.

Unless the buyer is a police officer...then you'd be outnumbered. ;)

As far as payment, cash (check it for signs of counterfeiting) if they want the bike now. Any check if they're willing to wait for it to clear your bank before taking the bike. Conduct the transaction in the lobby of the police department. :)

FYI: I once accepted a cashiers check for payment on a car I sold. The guy somehow cancelled it the next day when he decided he didn't want the car after all. I would up getting the car back, but I had to get a ride 30 miles out to pick it up where the guy left it. Huge waste of time, but I learned that in spite of all the testimony I had to the contrary, chashiers checks are NOT as good as cash.

I always say I'm on my way out,but could stop by their neighbourhood.
Then you dont have to wait for "no-shows".

If vehicle sells,I drive/ride to my bank (they follow) with whatever their payment is.
If bank accepts...its on them.Counterfeit,bum cheque,whatever.

Then, from that moment on,bike is theirs, cash is yours.

You can be a nice guy and ride it home for them, ride to insurance place, whatever.

The extra's can be delivered to their house,or a meet at parking lot somewhere.

That first tip especially. I wasted hours waiting for no-shows. If the buyer is serious and excited, they will love this option. If they say,"well maybe another time"...then you just ridded yerself of a no-show....or worse.

RSD.

Meet the buyer AT YOUR BANK!! There are cameras in the bank, you can deposit your cash right away, and if some of it happens to not be real...

+1, and print yourself a bill of sale(2 copies, if the buyer should want one).
Just something simple, I "your name" sell my 2005 Busa, vin# to "they print their name here" for "fill in cash price" on this date...AS IS!!! Make sure it says "AS IS"!
You both sign it.
Not sure about your state, but that'll cover you in court in VA.

I have no problem having craigslisters at my house. They don't however come into my house or garage. Just pull the bike out of the garage and shut the door... IF they buy the bike, I would have no problem opening the garage door since I have their name, address, etc..
Just my $.02.
There are SOME good people left in the world, and you can usually get a good idea of who you are dealing with by talking to them on the phone.
On that note, don't do an email only deal. Talk to them on the phone (get their phone number, etc) before you have them at your house. Its more work to scam someone you've talked to and created some sort of "relationship" with than it is to just ditch out on someone you've emailed...
Good luck either way! :beerchug:

, And anyone that comes to your house it would not hurt to go ahead and write down there tag Number off there vehicle just for future reference it something does come up missing on down the road.

LOL, make ya a deal Tim. :beerchug:

Have everything outside the garage with the door shut waiting for the buyer...

Never let your guard down cause like you said, you never know. Be safe :beerchug:

My best friend from high school days sold a Honda 450 dirt bike after posting on Ebay...the buyer was totaly in love...and HAD to have the bike, driving up from ~3hours away to check it out - and basically said if the bike looked as good as the pics, he was takin with him! :cheerleader:

He showed with his apparent wife at my buddies house, loved the bike and handed him a Cashiers Check for the amount. He was suspicious that the guy would have already gotten a check before seeing the bike, so he ran to the bank with the buyer and his wife to get their approval on it being a legit check...which they did. :beerchug:

He deposited the check, the guy left with the bike, and roughly two weeks later, the bank called my friend to tell him he was overdrafted several thousand and needed to immediately see them to make arrangements "to get this straightened out".

Turns out the check was somehow written using a brand new account that the guy opened (with enough money to obtain the Cashiers Check), and managed to make a withdrawal to pull all the cash out and close the account immediately after getting a check cut.???

Before the questions start coming...I already went through the whole "how did he pull money after it was already spent?", "they told you the check was good so it's their fault"...he basically said he fought them for a few weeks...and in return, they offered to ruin his credit, and freeze his accounts until he repaid the money. So...he lost his azz on the deal and never heard anything else from his bank, the cops, lost it.:banghead:

I just mention the story to say be careful dude...counterfit bills, counterfit cashiers checks...Ive also went back and forth about how to sell a bike. My local stealership offers a consignment service...I think they get 10% for parking in front of their dealrship, and take responsibilty for all paperwork, viewing, and guarantee payment upon sale.

I also remember a post about an Orgster that bought a helmet new off Craigslist...talked on the phone, awesome dude...during the discussion about how to get a look at it, the seller asked where the buyer lived...he answered..."oh man...I'm headed right by you house later, I can just swing by with the helmet". Deal went awesome, helmet was brand new as advertised, they talked a bit..."so what do you ride" came up, he showed hi his bike, his wife's bike...and that nite, 5 guys tried to break in his garage!

I wouldn't let anyone come to my house...meet them on the bike, have your wife or buddies with all the extras with you at the meet so everything can happen there...in public.

Funny that this story came up today.
No lie here, this is my story from tonight. I found a gun I've been wanting on Armslist.com and had some emails back and forth for a couple days with the seller. He called me tonight, and gave me his address and a time for me to come by and look at it.
Keep in mind, this is a defense shotgun I'm going to look at. So I google the Address for a general route for me to get there. There is NO HOUSE at the address he gave me. I call him back, he says its his warehouse, his truck will be in the back, just knock on the door. I bring a friend, we meet a complete stranger to buy a 12 gauge riot gun in an empty warehouse in not the best neighborhood. NO PROBLEM, right??
All went well. Later in the night, I had a kid drive up from Chicago come to my house to buy a leftover performance part from my Subaru, and I won't let him in the house, garage, anything, because I don't trust him. Kind of funny really how your mind works...
Honestly, one of these days I'm gonna be in the obituaries from a Craigslist ad gone wrong..
