OBD2 Digital Speedometer Project

Thanks to @sgerry for suggesting this in the thread above and I think it's something feasible so I took off with it. I originally was just going to add info the original thread, but wanted a more searchable title so just started a new one. I'll share pics along the way and work on it as I get time, at some point I need to actually start working on my bike, but this is much more fun and with nice weather hard to tear it apart and knowing I can't ride for a few weeks.

I'm guessing this will only be a temporary fix, I suspect someone will find the digital speedo option when the ECM is unlocked.. maybe. This just seems like a fun project.

After digging around for a GPS enabled digital speedometer, I came across this little LCD that appeared to be the right form factor. As a bonus, only hook up is OBD2 so actually is plug and play (if you have the OBD2 adapter) and you can read/clear codes. Length of cable given is pretty spot on for what we need on the bike. Tested it out and works as intended via OBD2. It was raining yesterday so didn't get to check out if the GPS work, but I'll go ahead a say it's good. Worse case, can always read speed via OBD2.

Took it apart after testing and was pleasantly surprised at the simple layout. The ribbon cable to the LCD is nice since it'll allow the button/plug of the board to be oriented correctly. Hope to get the frame for LCD and spot to hold the circuit board laid out, put together and get a test frame printed to determine angle of the the LCD. I haven't taken measurements yet, but it looks like there may be enough room under the stock windscreen to fit it all without interference.

There's obviously the issue of waterproof which I'll tackle at the end. Positive side is that it will reside under the windscreen so it is somewhat protected from water at least..

@sgerry suggested the front to basically have a "hook" so it'll make it nice and easy to attach and center on the dash. He also suggested turning the LCD sideways to gain a little extra room.

More to come as time allows. In my mind, this seems like a simple project but as most everything....nothing is ever as easy as it seems, lol.

So I am currently waiting for my obd2 to euro 5 adapter to come from amazon. Should be here by monday. I do believe this is going to be easy to do with the obd2 capabilities. Im not sure of accuracy yet but we will soon see. Way to go. I am fairly certain we can make something work

On this paticular unit you can adjust the GPS accuracy % so if it's a little off you can correct for it.

@Ked0607 I looked at that one as well, I liked the large simple layout, but it is too large to fit under a stock windscreen.

Just more info to log it. Max distance between dash and top of the screen is 1.5". The LCD on this unit is physically 1.5"H x 1.25"W. There is an option in software to rotate the display 90 so this is the route to take. If I can get it to fit under the stock screen, having anything else should be good to good. Just will be able to see it without ducking at 6ft tall, like I do. :)

This is awesome.
It is the first 3-D scanned, 3-D printed part that I think has been on the org.
And modifying a gps digital speedometer, wow, this also one of the coolest mods that I've seen.
Much respect, and I'm enjoying watching it come together.
It should be ready for shipping by the time I get my gen3, lol.

I'm still working on the 3D scan part, long story short it was due in April but had some legal issues with Creality so will be a little longer, ETA is unknown which sucks... This dash would be perfect part to scan in for a flush fit, but have another idea to try. It'll be a close race to see which one comes first, this being finished or you on a Gen3... I better get on it, I have a feeling it won't be too much longer for you with weather warming up more?! :)

Only downside with using OBD2 speed is that it won't read past 158 mph
It has GPS as well so may have a chance, TBD. Now how tell if it's reading GPS or OBD2 speed on LCD, I have no clue. It does have instructions in the box, which are hopefully in semi-English to figure it out.

The double bubble that I have gives us 2 inches to the bottom of the screen. I think we can faithfully assume that most of the double bubble designs that are not short, should be around the same

My free gsxr still has me looking for a deal on a gen3, which I've yet to see.
So no eta on what point I'll buy one.
Whatever the first one that I can't turn the price down.

Thanks! I kind of expected a little more room, but that's a good bit more.

It'll be pretty close fitting it under the stock windscreen. During lunch I think I have frame rev1 ready to print that will hold the mainboard and LCD at 37deg angle to test fitment and angle of LCD on the bike.
