Ok digital cam people

We are looking at a new one also. Will most likely buy next weekend. The two we like are the Cannon and the Kodak. I wish I knew the model numbers, but they both run about 300.00. 12x zoom and like 8 megapixel? I dont know much about cameras, I just want something that is user friendly, plug and play to my desktop, with good battery life. We just purchased a Sony a few months ago and it is very difficult to take a clear shot. Any movement at all and you have a blurry picture.

I like the Canon Rebel XTI It's a bargain SLR and takes great shots.

Between it, a Canon G9, and a couple of elphs I've got my bases somewhat covered, and while it seems that I am quite the Canon shill I've also owned about 4 different Nikons over the years as well, and liked em' all. If you've already got some film lenses for a Nikon then your answer is simple get a Nikon, If not then check out Canon, far as I am concerned those really are your only two digital SLR choices unless you are just in love with one of the other players. FWIW.

Canon XTI hasn't let me down. Missing some features, kinda just OK LCD panel, but does the job well.

Check out DPreview for all sorts of detailed camera reviews and sample photos... Two Tone, I'd check it out, Pay particular attention to the Canon and Nikon. Camera companies know how to build better cameras plain and simple. Sony FTL IMHO.

Almost everyone out there uses the same sensors, and similar electronics. The difference is in the lenses, the firmware, and the construction of the camera itself. This is where the old school film camera companies Canon, Nikon, etc wipe the floor with HPs, Sonys, on and on. Computer companies and printer companies build some really average cameras. They are feature rich and have fancy German sounding lenses, but in the end they usually lack that critical "good Photo" component.

I have the Canon Digital Rebel XTI 10.1 MP and I love it. But as Bogus said you will get as many answers to this question as the great "What tire is best" question. I have a couple of friends that have the Nikon's and they love them.

See my sig..

Not too much to add to Revlis' synopsis besides the fact that your priorities should be evaluated first and foremost.

1. Do you want to travel with a fairly large (for Motorcycle touring) DSLR and accessories?
2. Will it fit in your luggage compartments/hardbags?
3. What kind of pictures will you attempt to capture, panoramas, general scenery or at home stuff/portraits?
4. Will you need a wide zoom/telephoto lens for close stuff (18-55or70mm) and a longer one (70-200or300mm) or a combination like an 18-200mm with V(ibration)R(eduction)?
5. Do you intend to shoot thousands of pics before having to recharge or will you recharge nightly?
6. Do you like green eggs and ham?
7. What is the extent of your photography experience?
8. Will you delve into post-processing or just shoot and print?
9. How important is it for you to have video capability, since this is not typically offered in DSLRs?

1. I want something I can fit in my tank bag.
2. See Number 1.
3. General scenery, some action shots and home portraits.
4. Zoom feature a must, maybe not an extra lens, but need zoonm
5. Recharge every night.
6. yes
7. Novice
8. Shoot and Print
9. Already have video capability and would like to keep it.

they also have a 12.5 meg,6x opt zoom version I've been eyeballing.
Would that be the G9 you are talking about??
A650, I like it and the A640 that I have now because of the flip-out swivel screen mainly, want to be able to take a pic a just about any conceivable angel, it uses AA batteries which you can find anywhere and rechargable's seem to last forever, no expensive oddball proprietary batts. And besides the ridiculous amount of settings and options to play with, it takes pretty good pics on auto as you can see for an amateur like me,no camera collage-thanks, real user friendly. You can even get them for under $300 nowadays. Canon

I know you were talking photos...

I'm getting much better, but yeah, I NEED to find a real photographer for a couple of shoots. She wants to set up a shoot with my Car, and the Busa and while I am all for it (Spend a day in the Mountains Photographing Gen?? OK) I do feel that a real pro would capture much more and really bring out the best.

On the other hand, she's really comfortable with me behind the lens, so that helps a lot...

Ok so if Nikon lenses will worok on a Nikpn DSLR, will Cannon ones work on a Cannon DSLR.. I have Cannon AE-1 35mm film cam with 70-210mm,50mm, 80-200mm and 28mm lense. Would be nice if they all would work on a Rebel. Not to mention saved me a lot of scrach.

James, the DSLR's are not the best choice for a "travel" camera on a bike.. it is like taking a baby along for the ride IMO.. (you get the diaper bag and you can not drop the sucker)

Although I think you get superior images and being able to go from a long lens to a wide angle to any number of specialty lenses and filters, (not very many point and shoot cameras are all that customizable) makes for great ability, you need to decide if you want to risk an expensive DSLR camera body on the road with your bike.. I do on occasion do this (car shows, museums etc) but for just a day out playing, you need a pocket camera..

Another thing about the DSLR is the learning curve.. I came from film SLR's and it took me some time to get acquainted with the bells and whistles... (and lenses are like buying mods for your bike, "just one more and thats it honey I swear")

With that said, I would hate to be without either... but I think if I could only have 1 it would be my DSLR (and a nice foam carry box that fits in tank bag)

We plan on taking a DLSR on the road with us, we will be traveling the US, Canada, and Mexico on 2 HD ultra classics, however the cam will be in the trunk of one of the bikes with a lap top. We are gonna be looking for a good point and shoot as well. Kind of hard ot get good action shots if you have ot stop and unload the SLR from the trunk pack.

That just depends on how "Hard-Core" you are...

Stick that thing in a padded tank bag and it will be out in a jiffy.. For packaging purposes I would try to find a NIKON DSLR "bundle" with a zoom telephoto lens that is something like 18-200 with VR vibration reduction.

Also, could you elaborate on what makes the D40x "not well balanced". That way you could look for those features in a bundle..

Personally, I am not a fan of the D40x but that may be due to the fact that I use a D100.

I looked on the BH site for the D100 but they do not offer it that I can find. I would look on ebay, but have heard a few horror stories about buying cams off of there. Is the D80 just as good? jess has a lot of lense time behind 35mm SRL cams, I am the one who knows nothing about them.

As the the D40X the reviews I read said it has very few features, not well ballanced, has a short battery life, and is not "user" firendly... I want soemthing I can use as well as Jess and still get get pics..

One thing I did like about the D80 is the 5 shot burst.

Those were my main complaints. I have handled a colleague's D40x and did not like having to navigate through the menus to do something that I can push a button or turn a knob on my D100. Don't get me wrong, it is a very capable camera considering the compromises engineered into it for the target price, but I am doing stuff that it doesn't do.
Take a good look at the D80 as the D100 is no longer really sold new. You have to hunt around to find a new or factory refurbished model. Another option may be to look at a D200 with a lens like the one I mentioned but that is outside of your price limitations.

You can go to www.nikonians.org to learn more from very experienced NIKON enthusiasts. That site is a paid membership but worth every penny for the enthusiastic support from around the world.
