Peace of mind installed today

After my garage mishap a couple of weekends ago I finally had time to install my new Lockhart Phillips frame sliders. Forget about directions. There weren't any. With the info available on this board I was able to do the install pretty easily. The lazer pointer method is da bomb!

The only tips I can offer are to use a 2" hole saw to cut the holes arfter you've made your pilot hole. I masked off the area to avoid scratches and get a cleaner edge. Also, hold the drill so that teeth of the hole saw are on same plane as the bottom of the mounting screw hole that is next to where you are drilling.

Results? See for yourself.

Very nice work. I need to do this myself, just can't get used to the fact of drilling into those fairings.

Thanks. It's a lot easier than you think. The most critical step is locating the center of the hole you'll drill. I used the laser.

First, I took of the fairings. Then I set up the laser so that it was as high off the ground as the frame bolt that the slider screws into and perpendicular to the length of the bike. I used a short step ladder and clamped the laser and some spacers to one of the steps (While setting it up I thought that a camera tripod would be perfect for the job, but I didn't have one). I set the laser about 6' from the bike.

Once I had the laser dead on that bolt, I put the fairing back on (just using a couple of the mounting screws) and marked the spot that the laser indicated on the body. Then I took the fairing off and double checked that the laser was still pointing to the bolt (The bike could have moved while replacing/removing the bodywork).

Satisfied that the mark was in the right place, I drilled a 1/8" pilot hole at the mark and then did the rest, as described above.

The only other thing I would add is that I had my bike up on the stands (front & rear) and I think this is critical for stability and maintaining alignment of the laser during the process.

Good luck on yours!

A'Busa'd, on the left side it looks like you drilled two holes because of the curved plastic. Is that what you did?

I always forget something. Since there weren't any directions, how did you know where to drill the hole in the frame?

FAVahalik,

I only cut one hole into the plastic. Must be the reflection of someting that you see.

You dont drill a hole into the frame. The frame slider bolt replaces one of the engine mount bolts on each side of the bike.

Thanks for the bolt info. I ordered Vortex sliders today. I hope my installation turns out as good as yours. Nice job.

Looks great. I'm doing my install this week.  I like the putty method.  Seems straight forward enough.
Good luck!

I was going to do the putty method, but there is insulating foam on the inside of the fairing in those locations and the putty I chose wouldn't stick without removing the foam. Didn't want to rip out the foam. The laser method is the slickest.
