RADAR Question ????????

Jammers are illegal in Cali, the radar ones don't work. The lazer ones do, if mounted properly. The LEO will ususally aim for the front plate or headlights as they are most reflective, so if the transmitter is near those areas then it will jam. On cars it a good idea to run 2 or 4 transmitters. On a bike they are going to aim at the headlight so if the unit is mounted there your covered.

A good detector should give 4 to 5 miles range, long before the LEO has a visual. It also must have a good filter so other signals don't trigger it like garage door openers etc.

They work if you do the homework and get a good one and set it up correctly. There's a ex LEO that has a good site, he tests all the units and rates them. Radar Roy or Ray IIRC.

Of course after a lifetime of observing how and where they set radar up you should be fairly good at picking them out on the open road. Twisty narrow roads w/o shoulders don't lend themselves to radar. One thing not to do for sure is speed in town. There are too many places to lurk especially with laser, besides haulin azz is just plain foolish in the city.

I mostly avoid in town stuff on the bike anyway, just ain't no joy in it. The bike is for the fun roads...........the twisties. When theres a town in between do the posted or 5 over. Pick up the pace when the LEO's are less likely and the radar lest effective. Slow in the straights, time to shake out the kinks, why get a ticket on the most boring piece of asphalt out there?

Just sayin' speed smart.

+10....if someone doesn't want to use one, fine. I don't leave home without one unless I'm jogging or bicycling.

I still want to try the Valentine, since it's supposedly the same creator, but I'm concerned that I would be disappointed since all the new tech seems to confuse things. And most local agencies around here are still using K anyway.
The V1 wont disappoint for detection range. Mine is very sensitive on K band, almost ESP like. Besides, you can try a V1 for a month and if you don't like it you can return it and get your money back. It is a no lose situation for you to try it. My local PD uses mostly K band and some LIDAR and I've been saved by my V1 more times than I can count.

And FYI, most experts will tell you that jammers do not work. The people defending them usually are in the business of selling them.
LIDAR jammers do indeed work. Not legal everywhere though.

OK what a radar detector does is pick up a frequency. K band and Ka band are a wide spead frequence. So you may pick it up in a near by area... Lazer.Your ****ed. Radar is telling you your hit cause it can be aim in a smaller area. Now the office has to lock that speed in or hes gonna have issues... Becuase now your slowing and he wont get a chance to lock your speed on the gun...But still be prepaird to get pulled over if you was going at least 10 mph over the posted limit... Always ask to see the locked speed on his gun. It your right to view the evidence... Make sure hes not BS you...And always remain calm in your speach...
Just my thought on Radar & detectors...

In use escort 8500 with HARD flasher in my helmet

Swear by them.....

Just an FYI, the radar isn't needed for them to give you a ticket. . . I know from personal experience because I had a cop tell me as soon as he walked up to my window "I didn't clock you. I clocked that guy and estimated your speed off him." I pleaded not guilty in court and was told that "In order for officers to pass training they have to be able to estimate speed in several different situations with a steady accuracy rate of plus or minus 2 mph, so if he estimated your speed at ___ that number is accurate." Unfortunately for me, he was wrong, but the judge wouldn't hear it. Got to keep the ticket and pay my city $300.

 Nice one. You know black duct tape is the fastest color. Actually, wiith the lights down low she looks pretty good.

The Escort 8500 saved me and three riding buddies on Sunday while riding on federal land (big ticket). The KA band went audible and I was able to warn them to slow down in enough time. The Ranger was sitting on the side of the road up ahead and immediately droppped in behind us when the last bike passesd him. He rode behind us for a few miles just waiting for us to slip up, he finally turned around when a Saturn came speeding in the opposite direction.

Mine has payed for itself many times on the bike and in the car, I don't rely on it but it is better than nothing at all imo. If you are traveling at insane speeds it may not have enough time to warn you before you reach the threat. I bought mine from a friend for $120 and it saved my bacon two days later!

I had an old Escort made by the guy that now makes Valentine (twice the size of today's detectors.) It registered X and K bands only, but it was better than anything you can get today for K band. I had that thing pick up radar two miles away in the mountains (bouncing off the rock no doubt.) I have tried everything since then and everything fails miserably.

I still want to try the Valentine, since it's supposedly the same creator, but I'm concerned that I would be disappointed since all the new tech seems to confuse things. And most local agencies around here are still using K anyway.

My unit is K and Ka. Many motorist tell me that their unit never went off. I hit them, lock it in, and pull them over.

Look around for a unit that detects radar and jams laser. I have seen cheaper laser diffusers/jammers for bikes that are around $400. The laser diffusers if mounted correctly work very well. I have 2 vehicles with them on them and have been hit with laser several times in each while speeding and nothing has happened so far.

Does that work if you get hit with the rear antenna ? or from the rear ?

I used to run a detector, and found out that when it didnt work, I always got a ticket. Now I dont use a radar detector and most of the time, they just give me a warning. At least that has been my expierence.

I try to be very understanding. I typically reduce on the side of the road. A lot of officers will write full tilt if a detector is present. I don't follow that philosophy, but understand it.

I'm sorry but I disagree about a detector's effectiveness. I have a Beltronics 9500 that interfaces with my Zumo into earbuds and last Sunday alone I was warned 4 times BEFORE the police unit appeared coming at me or parked. It's true, instant on radar can get you but many more police units are constant with their transmission band. I wont say anything if I only have marginal info on a subject but I worked radar for 10 years as a copper in Los Angeles and now, as a rider, I wouldn't be with out one. Respectfully, Raydog
(sorry, not that good a pic of the detector)

Instant on. That's the only way to work in todays environment.

Around here they run with them on all the time. I pick them up long before we can see each other.

You're lucky that they do. I worked for a department that required audio, video and RADAR on at all times. Obviously they were more concerned with the officers behavior than enforcing the speed limit

Not true fellas. Many units still use microwave technology that may detect you well before the LEO ever sees, observes and "visually tracks" you under circumstances. For example, coming over a horizon. If I had a radar unit before my last speeding citation I would have known to slow down faster prior to coming over the horizon and before the LEO would have even seen me.

LEO cannot "legally" enforce a speeding citation if they did not first calculate a "visual tracking history." Learned all this from TallTom. If they don't track you the way they were professionally trained to that's a valid reason to have it dismissed.

I think that's going to differ from state to state, however any officer should IMHO visually observe the vehicle speeding as well as use their RADAR / LASER. If there's any question in my mind it's over. If a driver makes a sincere and convincing argument I will fully test my unit to assure myself that it is in fact working properly and that I used it properly. I've received citations and I understand the cost involved including insurance rates. There's more to running RADAR than pushing a button.
