Raising the rear: How much difference

OK I have been planning on raising mine 1 inch in the rear.  I talked to a race shop this week.  They said if I raise the back I should raise the front or it will want to push the front tire in the corners and will cause cupping and premature tire wear.

They also said tha just raising the rear with dog bones changes the geometry of the rear suspension and will adversly affect being able to dial it in properly.  Again:

They suggest raising the rear with an aftermarket shock $$$$ etc.  I don't think they are money grubbers, but I'm not sure how much validity they have in their comments.

Anyone noticed cupping, premature tire wear, pushing the front in corners, or funky geometry due to +1 dog bones?

I haven't had it up long enough to check for cupping. You can also get cupping from low tire pressure. I'll take my chances either way. I love the feel. I guess I'll be buying more tires

are they saying this from a racers stand point or everyday street riding?

Both. They say when racing or hard cornering it will want to push the front tire due to the changed bike geometry. They also say that it will "shred through tires" and the harder you ride, the more noticable it will be. Since 80% of my riding is considered hard road riding I'm wondering if anyone else has noticed any of the symptoms they claim. I guess I won't care as long as the front lasts for the life of the rear.

I put lower links on mine, about 2", piece of cake. I put it on a pitbull stand then broke loose the bolts. I slid a 5/8" steel rod through the swingarm pivot. I put a jackstand under each end of the rod, one on each side of the bike and lowered the pitbull stand. It was solid as a rock.

there won't be enough riding days to check this out. However I'll put it to the test come march/april. I've read all the past posts on this and haven't read any complaints. We'll see

(Charlesbusa @ Jan. 21 2006,19:23) I installed mine yesterday and did a test ride in the canyons today;

WOW!!

I like it!  I weigh 165lbs and have always had to muscle(countersteer) to make the bike lean.  With the 180/55 and the +1 dogbones, it feels a lot more like my GSXR1000 did and I don't have to muscle it down anymore.  I can ride more relaxed and its not nearly as much work.
+1

Dropping to a 55 profile tire, and +1" made a much bigger difference than i tought it would
No "dropping" about it...55 is a taller profile. 180/55 is taller than a 190/50

Blaa, you know what i ment.

I'm looking to the 190/55 2TC on my next tire change. Although i must say for Hot Florida roads i like the Qualifiers better than the Pirelli, or PPs

The only thing i noticed adversly, was it was harder on my hands for a little while till i got used to it.

But most of that was due to "lazy riding" IE not using my abdomin, back and legs to support me better.

know this is an old mod but i just did this mod and took a quick spin around the block so far i can notice a big diffrence in the feel of the bike, did not to get to corner hard though. If anyone else is thinking about this mod do it! I did not take photos but it took me 20 minutes to do the mod. Use rearstand to lift rear tire, remove belly wing, using jack lift from breacket holding belly wing on ( put something above jack so bar wont bend), remove exhaust (makes it easier to get to the bolts), remove the 17mm bolts i think it is just the bigger ones, you do not need to remove the 14mm's slide out the rod holding them in, lift rear a little further to make holes meet, replace the rod with dog bones and then tighten the bolts and put it all together. if any one has anyquestions just pm me and ill do everything i can to help. IF ANYONE IS IN THE HOUSTON AREA AND WANTS TO DO THE MOD I WILL HELP FOR FREE IF NEEDED.
