I like the way you think. I can totally relate and can confirm the hands-on skills will follow the more you do it. You'll never know if you can (or even good at) things unless you try. The seat mod is a perfect place to start IMO too.

I like that seat and my saddlemen is what mashes me able to ride for anything more then an hour. Seeing this madness me wanna get to getting my stock seat recovered and a channel put in it. I do understand why saddlemen puts the piece of wood down the center now after seeing yours so I think I'll try to get that part copied as well.
 
I had the seat made at Chair Care Upholstery. They do a lot of custom motorcycle, boat, and jet ski seats. Their website is Home and they are located in Hollywood Florida. I just took a two-hour ride this morning with the new seat and it is a big improvement, but I may have them increase the width of the channel to 1.5 inches instead of 1 inch. I ordered the tank cover from bagsterworld.de since I could not find it in the US. I had the same tank covers on my last two Gen 2s and loved them. There is padding for your knees and attach points for a tank bag. Nice quality and you can customize the cover if you want. I will take some more pics and send them later.
