Racism sucks all the way around for everyone...there's nothing to gain by hating ANYONE just because of the color of their skin...that kind of hate begins at birth...if parents don't step in and mold kids to believe we are all truly equal, it will never end...

As an aside, and I hope this makes everyone chuckle because that's about all you can do at times like this...my grandmother lives in NC.  I've never been close to her for many reasons, one of which is that she's got to be a card carrying member of the KKK...oh, she's sweet and meek (ummm, yeah), walks with a cane nowadays...but, she's always found it acceptable to hold "blacks" as beneath her...over my many years of being in her presence, I've learned that I'm glad I didn't grow up anywhere near her...

Well, she comes up to VA last week because my stepfather passed away...I'm sitting in my Mom's living room with the entire NC clan (Klan?!) and my husband...Grandma starts asking about my boys, how old are they, etc?  I reply "Sam starts kindergarten in the fall" and she quips back without taking a breath and with a whisper, as if I've got some (please forgive me, but I'm speaking like she would and often does) "black folk" in the next room "Are there many coloreds in his class?"

Coloreds?  Did I even spell it right?  Is it even a word?!  

Insert a picture of me with my face getting red, blood pressure rising, then the sheer embarrassment of even being in the same family with her...I was mortified.  I'm used to this talk at her house in NC from when I was a kid, but now she's in VA and I simply don't subscribe to her beliefs.  So, I looked at my husband who is shaking his head and no doubt thinking about how stupid this woman sounds (yeah, he's heard it all too since he was 17), and I said "There are ALL KINDS of kids in his school, Grandma", then I conveniently went to get some water before I started telling her how I really feel about her and racism...it wasn't the time nor place, so I just had to walk away...

She followed up her comments to me with comments on all of my step-sisters...she was wondering why they all married men that aren't "American"?  They're from all walks of life, like most Americans...just different heritage than she is...she honestly is one of those people that makes me embarrassed to be white some times...being around someone like her just drains me...

I don't know how my Mom avoided subscribing to her stepmother's racism, but she has never raised me to talk or think that way...it amazes me in this day and age that people like my grandmother live out their days in sleepy towns in NC while truly believing this...but, it happens...it's in my own family and it's pathetic...

You and your mother are examples of how racism will eventually go away one day. All we can do is be mindful of what we expose our children to, and how we teach them do deal with different situations. Sounds like you and your hubby are doing a fine job in that regard. Now if we can just work on that Harley problem he's got........

He'll just want to ride your bike then! I was discussing the whole boat thing during a water break while riding yesterday, my friends just don't get the whole fast on the water idea. An old 80's style jet boat is in my 5 year toy plan, but since seeing the turbo bikes run over the weekend, it might get pushed a little further down the list.......

Seriously, when I was younger I had a stripper fund, I used to save all my singles left over from bar-hopping in a drawer, and when there was enough in there I'd go invest in the local education fund.......They're all putting themselves through school ya know...........LOL
