The News

So if we have someone current like say Damon John who started a black clothing line FUBU (which stands for For Us By Us) and has made fortunes doing so, should the black community shun him? How about the White Community?

Now let's go with a name like Quaker Oats. About as white as you can get. If they said Made by Quakers for Quakers, they'd be run out of business for racial capitalism.

If a brand appears to cater to whites, they are shunned, if a brand caters to blacks let's do more.

Why do you suppose this is?

There was a coffeeshop/diner that was named Koffee Kup Kafe. The reason for that was there was a place called the Coffee Cup that was also in the same general area. People confused the two all the time. And one has better food/service etc. While the other not so much.

The K establishment got blacklisted by the NAACP. Even though they welcomed all. When that didn't shut them down and in fact that gave them free publicity, the NAACP threatened a lawsuit against the city for allowing of that spelling. Despite being told and shown the reasons why.

So again it accomplishes what. They grew in popularity. This "perceived" racism isn't doing a thing to quell racism. All it does is fan the flames. Nobody knew about the K establishment except the locals. But when somebody decides to say it's associated with the Klan, the trouble begins. We can't even feed, clothe, or gather now because OMFG someone who I've never met, never hurt, and never considered to be a problem, calls me out because I like butter with an Indian on it, syrup with a black woman on it, rice with a black man on it and an ice cream treat with the word Eskimo on it. But holy Jesus as a white man I better not buy anything that might seem like I'm insensitive to someone else.
Why do you allow your brain to function at such a low level all the time Tall? There is nothing derogatory about "Quaker". It simply says oats made by Quakers in their special way. I'm walking down the isle in the store and I come to rice, there are 10 choices of roughly similar quality, why would I pick the company that took the time to wrap their product in an insulting box? Right dummy, I haven't bought Uncle Ben's anything in years. To be honest I don't even think they realized the money they are losing until now.

I knew it couldn't have been a racial slur, I was joking. Tell me that never crossed your mind when you went to Cracker Barrel.
I'm offended by the term Cracker. This goes back to the days of Slavery when the WHITE slave owners would CRACK the whip either in the air or across the flesh of a slave. I'm highly offended at this reference. I am not part of that community. It opresses me.

Pas the gas cans and matches.

There are already many tasteful memorials around for Civil war dead (both sides). Go to the cemeteries and battle fields. That's where they belong and I have never heard a word in protest about them. I've visited many of them.
Hi. My ancestry goes back to the Pilgrims I am related to John Alden, Miles Standish. I am also related to Rev Samual Parris in Salem Ma. That is it the witch trials.

As for statues, there really need not be any statues of anyone erected (past, present or future)...as you stated in other posts, some statues give a rallying point for groups who really should no longer exist in the 21st century.
We will always have statues of people. Some of the oldest surviving art are figurines of women, the first time you drew a picture of a thing, it was your face. All art is about being human so the human figure in art won't ever go away.

Pic #1. Questionable marketing ? Or just cute kids in photo ops?
Pic #2. Should people with brown skin be offended?
Pic #3. "Choose your side"
Pic #4 Unreal. Who would put there kids in that krap?

#1 Just cute kids.
#2 No, the brown skinned kid has a better car than the white kids.
#3 I'll take the sports car if that's what you mean.
#4 Parents who want to start a modeling career for their kids.

You can buy it, it's the company that makes it that the people are complaining about.

I used to work as an illustrator and I did a lot of imagery for packaging and for products that had art printed on them. Anytime you showed everyday people, their racial identity was an issue. It was usually solved by making the person look kind of Asian, but a little white and a little black and kind of Hispanic too. I always thought that was absurd. In situations where there were small groups of people depicted, it was obligatory to show as wide a range of races as possible and you had to make sure at least one was a woman. It wasn't real life, it was advertising.

In re: “I think the average American is acutely aware of what happened to Native American culture.“

Why do you think this is true? Average Americans acutely aware?
The atrocities are a well known topic and where age appropriate, they're not overlooked when history is taught. Some people still choose not to pay much attention to it.

I always assumed the name came from the color of white people. I always laughed about it but I don't recall ever being called a cracker in a hateful way. If it's associated with slave owners' abuse of black slaves, no I don't want to be thought of like that. That is even more ridiculous than comparing me to the color of a cracker, however.

The atrocities are a well known subject? You have to be kidding.

You guys don't understand the history of these symbols. During the late 1800's and early 1900's there was an effort to define Black people as mentally childish and needing of white guidance. We see this in movies, printed papers, cartoons and minstrel shows. They characterized black as submissive, comical and stupid. Many of the product names and images sprung from these negative stereotypes and a few such as Uncle Ben's rice and Aunt Jemima syrup managed to survive. This is also where the infamous blackface scandals were born.

These images are both purposeful and damaging. In a segregated world where many whites never actually knew real black people, these images defined Blacks. Even today, we are hindered by these lingering characterizations as we move into positions of responsibility, like President.

Are these harmless jokes irritating people with decidedly weak senses of humor? Nope. These images are powerful and damaging. For example travel the USA and you will be amazed that nearly every state, road, and lake has a Native American Name. They saved white people in this country from sure starvation, taught them about crops that would flourish here and even inspired our founders with a representational form of government. However, when it was decided to consolidate all of the land in N. America from sea to shining sea, images of Natives changed from noble and proud peoples to savages. Changing public opinion of "Indians" was a necessary prequel to the genocide that followed. Now "Indians" are portrayed as a weak, poor and drunk people who couldn't cope with modern civilization - dirty deed done and hidden in history with the average American none the wiser.

Since there was a media, whites have tried to stereotype and define Black people in ways that justified the atrocities committed during slavery and the oppression that followed. A more recent example was Hilary Clinton defining Black Youths as "Super Predators". What then followed was a willing liberal America that approved of incarcerating an entire generation of Blacks for non-violent offenses.

So these symbols are serious, purposeful propaganda.

In re: “For example travel the USA and you will be amazed that nearly every state, road, and lake has a Native American Name.”

I see this everywhere. I was born in Shoshone county in N Idaho. The Kootenai tribe had their name put on the county right next to Shoshone county too but where are they? All over the northwest are county names of the Indian tribes that (used to) occupy those lands. Take a look at the quality of the land area where reservations are in MT, ID, WA or AZ. The Blackfeet res land right across the road from Glacier NP in MT for example is CRAP compared to the Park land.

I got called a "cracker" no less than 2000 times. My black kid friends would call me that. They nor I knew it's inference. Their momma used to say you going to go play with that "cracker"? They just called me cracker or soda cracker.

So I called them the N word because nobody told us it was a bad word. They were my best childhood buddies. We played Harlem Globe Trotters on the hoop my dad put up. I was a ni&$#r just like them. I guess I was the token white kid. We were about 4 or 5. I woke up waiting to play with them and I went to sleep thinking about playing with them the next day.

Then the CRA of 1964 happened. I didn't know it existed at that age. I just knew that all of a sudden they couldn't play with me anymore. It was because the race wars had begun. Both sides wanted to protect their families. Suddenly my dad and Mr. Proctor were carrying guns and rounding up kids well before dark. It's been going downhill ever since.

Got to hand it to you my friend you are a piece of work. You actually posted that the CRA ruined your basketball game! That's so socially narcissistic its funny. I'm going to keep this one for use as an example if you don't mind....

One of many references to it's history.

'Cracker' conveys history of bigotry that still resonates - CNN

There are plenty more. See if a person needs to find a history to support racial bigotry they can. Meanwhile most everyone doesn't care nor hover around a word, phrase, act, label or exchange when they have a present day conversation. UNLESS they have to find a reason to stoke a cause.

It's horribly insensitive for any person to NOT know that the useage of "Cracker" though right? Just a bunch of bigots that don't take the time to dig into things enough.

These days racist is now defined as anyone that doesn't vote Democrat. Man if my choice is Biden, I'll write in Snoopy for my vote.

I am not going to insist I be called European American. It's about as stupid as Uncle Ben's rice being inappropriate.

Didn't ruin my basketball game. It ruined racial relations. But you can use it anyway you like. I don't have high expectations for your preferred "fit".

I always associated these product names with pride and goodness, meaning they were the best. In the light of the posts sense, I have some new products to start up, and need some investors. Honky’s red neck crackers. They are pure white, real salty, no taste, come in a box that looks like a rebel flag, with a picture of Larry the cable guy on it. We will sell them out the back of a van at NASCAR races. To increase sales and market share, we can dye the same crackers black , put them in a black box with white lettering. We call them, Tk-A-Ne’s. BLaM squares, with a picture of Collin Kaepernick, sold out of the same van at BLM marches. Was going to do Fruit Loops also but it’s already taken. What could go wrong?

NASCAR grew up brother, you'll have to rethink distribution.

No, I'm not kidding. I remember being told about infected blankets, Indian bounties, scalping and pushing Indians off of land all the way back in grade school and I'm 53 now. Maybe it's something not stressed in other parts of the country but there seems to be quite a bit of unvarnished historical information online. I have only lived in Wisconsin and Upper Michigan and there may be quite a few more Native Americans living here than other places. Looks like there are only a few small Indian reservations in the eastern and southern portions of the country. Of course, most Indians don't live on reservations any more and you often can't tell they're Native American by looking at them.

I just love it, a bunch of kids go out to play and all of them innocently call each other by racial slurs with a totally straight face! None of them have a clue anything is different about the other except one is darkest and one is lightest and the rest are in between! They're kids, of course they are learning by looking and listening but in the end, what they're having for dinner is much more important. That's how it should be all through life.
