The Unthinkable Happened Today

can you explain some more about how they got on base?
the explorer must have had some base stickers, even if the van was stolen and I know here you still have to show ID at the gate.
I wonder if maybe the vehicle could be tracked by checking how many black ford explorers are registered there.
Also, I wonder if the guards were in on it ( maybe the guards buddy?). A lot of bases I've been on use rent-a-cops ( a BAD BAD BAD idea, in my opinion) I don't trust them as many of them I have encountered are wannabes with bad attitudes and forget their role. It might be worth looking into. ID had to be shown to somebody and I am sure the cameras have them showing up on base and which guard let them in.
Sounds like terrorists to me.......its ok to kill them. As a matter of fact; its in our job description!
That sucks; I would have thought my bike would be safe on base.
My condolences, buddy.

Investigators are just now able to check tape to see where they entered post since they didn't have a solid description of the vehicle before. They did not have a decal, but an ID is all that they would have needed.

Question
How did they take it, did they pick it up and put it in the van. or did they push it out of the lot. was the steering locked.

Assuming they hot-wired it or had some type of master key because they drove it right out of the parking lot. I did not have the steering locked, but since they drove it I don't think it would have mattered.

Don't they have cameras at all exits on post?? Check with them...cause they should have checked in right?? It should be somewhere on camera.

Investigators started looking last night since they have identified the vehicle. The problem is how far back they may have to look because it may have entered, but never left and be sitting somewhere out of sight.

Isn't Bragg a closed post? You would need an ID and Sticker on your car or a pass. If the car had temp tags it probably did not have a DOD sticker and needed to be registered.

Sucks either way.

Only need an ID card to get on.

No kidding? When I was stationed there you needed a base sticker and here in Norfolk you need a DOD sticker or a pass Plus your ID.

Sucks though either way.

Sorry to hear that Bro, that really bites~!~

Good luck getting a new baby.

Enough with the 'sorry for your loss' replies already. We need to know what you did or didn't do to secure your bike when it was parked, and how the thieves stole it.

Would they have been able to take it if you had done what I do whenever I have mine parked for any length of time:
1. Use the delivered front fork locking mechanism.
2. Put my disc brake lock on the rear.
3. Cover the bike and lock the cover through the front wheel with a cable lock.

Because it was during the work day nothing was done. It was sitting in the parking lot as I and everyone else here does. The lot was deemed secure and the bike is in plain sight with lots of people moving through it, camera surveillance and armed guards.

My real point of posting was let everyone know or remind them that you are never as secure as you think you are.

Holy crap man!!!! A government facility parking lot? Ft Bragg? In complete daylight? Did I understand this correctly!? You also mention its the 18th one in the last year? Boy those guys do have some balls but it sure looks like the facility isn't doing much to improve on this if there have been a consecutive 18 stolen!!!
My heart feels heavy for you man! This also scares me because if its that easy to repeatedly steel bikes even within a government controlled property, I now imagine my poor sweet Busa doesn't stand a chance and I've only been lucky till now. :-( Bike theives should be roped to the back of a bike and dragged at 70 MPH for 2 miles as punishment!!!!:madfire:

19 - they got another one last night!

The CID is gonna have some fun with this one; you have enough info for them to find the POS. There are cameras on every entrance and exit I guarantee it. Go talk to the MP's and the CID guys. They had to have a sticker and some kind of ID to get onto post. IF they do nothing, go to the local paper/television and see if they'll do a story on it, the public relations fallout will get someone on post moving on it.

Kinda stupid to steal from a soldier that know's how to shoot and has the mindset for it....keep us posted as I'll bet they get busted quickly. Good luck Soldier and thank you for your service!

The tapes are being reviewed now that they have something to look for, but only an ID is required to get on post as crazy as that sounds. I believe they will be caught shortly. I just want to be there when it happens!

Has a lot to do with the number of contractors around here. Retirees are also not required to have stickers.

could be an inside job as far these crooks getting into base. hopefully the insuarance company does something for ya.

Thanks everyone for the thoughts and wishes of concern. At this point I just hope that the information obtained helps catch them and deter other folks from trying.

I think for their punishment, they should be brought to Robbinsville in April... We'll give a whole new meaning to "Busa Bash"!!
