Hm has anyone ever posted a walkthrough on dropping the tranny? My local stealership is packed tight for a few weeks and wants wayyy too much to drop it for me and I am on winter break from school so I figure I might as well learn how to do it. Any info would be awesome, or if someone lives close by and wants a student for the day I'll pay you

I'm in northern MO, 13:1 kit plus second gear. Did it myself, works great. If you already have the parts, about 2-3 days. All by the book. LMK?

Did you have to replace the 2 gears and shifter fork? I'm about to under go this project myself, I really hate having to be easy in 2nd.I will be removing the engine and splitting the cases. I havent let a dealer touch any of my bikes since 1988, I know I can do it right and much much cheaper than the dealership.

Usually 2 gears, 1 fork, and it is a good idea to install billet shafts if it is going to see some abuse. The drum needs to be carefully inspected where it drives the 2nd gear fork. If the gears are not too badly damaged, they can be undercut.

Yep,I had missed second about six times last season,so just as soon as I split my cases for a piston kit, that was the first thing I checked. Both gears were starting to pit. I went to bikerbandit.com and ordered parts while I was building the other end, in about 4 days, for about $210.00.Be sure to get new snap rings(3). We both started about the same time,my first lesson was an '82GS1100,you know that funny thing they do that puts pieces of clutch springs up in the cam jounals

First find the mount socket to remove the adjusters & lock rings,it's a must have.Drain fluids, have a friend help you drop the motor.Place the motor on plenty of padding upside down, then make a little stand to hold up the back of the motor.Look at the block of wood next to the impact driver, it will holdup the motor so that when you split the cases it's level.this made things much easier.

Now it's time to get the book out and study for awhile before you dig in,just so you know whats what. I took pictures of this whole process just to be safe. Be super clean and exact, things should be fine. Never be in a rush, thats when a $2.00 part becomes a $2000.00 mistake. I hope this helps,LMK. I check the board about twice a day

Also be sure to keep everything in neutral.

Awesome, I just bought a new camcorder so I'll have to talk a buddy into recording it for me, great info! Should make it a sticky
