Jack of all trades: plumbing, electrical, sheetrock and finish, mechanic, painter, cabinetry and counter tops. There is a long list of things.

i am self sufficient in my opinion and a survivor. i really don't care what the challenge is, but as long as i can support my family. aside from that, minor mechanics, roofing, tiling, sheetrock (finish work is mediocre), home audio installation.

I been pondering this for years, and with the economy having issues, it makes more and more sense.

Do any of you use a barter system for anything?

I know computers and can do that for ANY type of business for trade for their product. All I have to have is a roof and food. I could fix systems at a local grocery chain, and probably at my apartment [that seems to be vacating more than ever] and work out free room and board for keeping them running when they can't afford to pay some service company excessive [and not worth it] amounts of money. Secondly, I would EASILY and gladly work on a farmers field to to help grow food for myself and others.

list off what you could do

I've been pondering your question over the last day or so. I have a number of things I can do that have value in our current, highly complex society. I started to list them, but it's just too long. If we eventually revert back to the hunter/gatherer level of civilization (entirely possible...how long did the Roman Civilization last again? How old is America?), I'd certainly not do so well, as I'm geared to survive and thrive in modern society.

The problem with bartering though, is the inefficiency inherent with the system. Even using the internet, to locate others who would desires one another's "goods or services", then haggling over the value of disparate goods or services long enough for a trade to be mutually beneficial would be quite time consuming.

Money is a medium that allows us to be much more productive than a bartering system, as it eliminates the need to find someone else who has a good or service we need/want.

I am a PGA Golf Professional. Guess I could give those golfers out there lessons and improve their games. Also, good deals on golf equipment.

I guess I'm thinking with system collapse, internet will be of no use since no one will bother with the cost since food and shelter would be top priorities. Gone is the texting, gone are cell phones, and net connectivity.... people want to get food. We will need to grow it, work hard on it, and or trade skills to farmers for growing it. Make our own gardens, and provide and survive. I can't see my computer skills really being of much use when there is no electricity, so I better be happy with a shovel, plowing the land. :)

Money works, but not when it's completely worthless paper that no one respects or backs.
