What's the point..

Just a Sunday rant.

Sometimes I tell myself what's the point. Why have things you enjoy but yet no time to enjoy them. My work schedule for the last 15 years has allowed me little time to enjoy the fruits of my labor.

Sure, I enjoy my time at home, what little of it there is. When not away most of the "free time" is spent on "house duties" such as cleaning and getting some food in the house. Running errands seems to take the better part of most days.

I often wonder what it feels like to have some sort of "normal" in one's life. Everything I do has to play second to my work. This includes Doctor visits, Dentist etc. When you are "on call" 24/7 it does get trying at times. Most business's understand and will "fit you in" which helps. It's still tough.

Sure, this was my life choice. I enjoy it but working long hours at anytime of day or night sleeping when I can and very little exercise. (my fault) I make good money and provide myself and Mikki with the "comfortable" things but it comes at a huge sacrifice. It wears on me a little more each year.

Retirement is now in sight and let me tell you..I can't wait. No cell phone, no pager and in my own bed every night.

Just for fun I did inventory on the garage toys. I wish I had not thus the rant.

Hayabusa: I keep a service record. 03/30/08 coolant change. 5374 miles. Today 5730 miles on ODO.

Buick: Middle of June 08. 515 miles. Today, 653 miles.

Tundra: Don't really feel bad on this because the time and the deal was right. I needed a retirement truck.

Brought it home July 24, 2008. Picture says it all.

Well, I feel better. Thanks for listening. I'll carry on as you do and ponder "what's the point".

very deep there, rune. "The meaning of life" is always a tough one. And it can be different for everyone.
Perhaps your rant/questioning means it's time to reevaluate priorities? STUFF will never satisfy as much as the people in your life :) Precious time should be spent on precious people

I believe you are correct. I get to spend little time with Mikki and she is in good health now. This will change more than likely but I pray not.

Priorities. Yeah, I need to work on that.

I can honestly say that I understand exactly what you are saying. Probably better than anyone else

I knew you and Jenny would understand. Same life style.

Yep. Jenny and Mikki both have to make big sacrifices to put up with our jobs. How many times have you gone out to eat, just to get a call for a "suprise" train just after getting your table?:banghead:

Remember how lucky you are for many things...your own physical health included...and it'll help you psychologically...

Tried and true...

I been in that place too. When I woke up, I realized my company was taking advantage of my dedication. I was a working manager with 3 staff. When I stopped the extra work, I told the company they needed to hire about 3 more people to cover. Instead they let me go. Shortly after, they "repositioned" the guy that let me go, and had to hire 4 more workers anyway.

A prayer and a week later, I got a job doing EXACLTY what I wanted in I.T., but ZERO over time. I got my live back! Cancelled cable, tossed my cell phone and found a lot of time for family and friends, as well as my creative hobbies.

If you are not LIVING, you are dieing

Not so much now as Seniority has it's privileges.

They talk about the economy. My Lord, we have 95 Eastbound trains on the lineup. Christmas I suppose.

Scar, take a look out your window. Must be a lot of ships parked out there. You LA Harbor guys. Any ships parked?

That's true. Why I'm on a yard job now. First couple years though, ugh, not good.

We dont have that kind of volume but business is booming on the rail here.

My health declines more every year. I can feel it.

Best way to describe it is "jet lag". I have been in the jet lag state for 15 years.

There are a "few" employees on the Westend that have more "working tickets" than calendar days.

Figure that one out.

Hermano,
I am nowhere near retirement and have asked myself the very same question. Your dedication to work and a career is commendable. Personally, I have taken three extended sabbaticals in the last six years. Was lucky enough to model my life into one that allows me to take time off for several months at a time. This lifestyle has me living cheap outside of the states, a place I am yearning for more and more everyday. Life can be expensive and keeping up with the "Joneses" can make it worse. We all want our material possessions, nice super fast motorcycles, big new trucks, well appointed home and well dressed loved ones. The point is that if you want to have these things you have to resign yourself to your need to keep it up at work. We enslave ourselves, shackled to the daily grind so that we can support our lifestyle..

STFU and take a day off and go enjoy yourself! That's what I do!
no one likes it, too bad!
