I think you’re missing the point about mpg.
It’s a handy indication of how efficient your engine is running… too lean, too rich or right in the sweet spot, a bit like assessing the way it’s tuned.
I look at my kms per litre ( mpg in your currency ) on my dash each tank full and each ride and I know immediately if it’s running rich or lean for whatever reason.
A bit like having an air/fuel ratio gauge on the dash.
It totally depends on throttle openings and engine load of course, but when it’s a constant cruising speed you just know how it’s efficiency is doing.
Yep.
You did this for a living recently, I did a long time ago, but occasionally will still help someone out, more geared towards Mercedes, Porsche, sometimes something else.
The few folks I have helped with motorcycles, it has always been something which comes my way about 10,000 miles after a pipe and a tune.
In every case I found we had to open the motor and clean, or decarbonize. It seems every bike which came my way was tuned for performance, with very little regard of what happens during normal fractional throttle open riding. So the result is a nice hp kick after tune and then once the motor gets fouled up, the performance is way below stock.
Too rich, give carbon deposits due to unburnt fuel, it interferes with dilution of cylinder wall lubrication and creates problems.
I have not had one running too lean, it seems the tuners always go the other way.
I have a buddy with a performance shop in Laurinburg, he does quite a few Busas, but he is not here on the board. He normally lets me use his equipment, in most cases I just go back to the stock map in ECU editor and then see if any further tweaking is needed.
