I come from the equivalent of the June and Ward Cleaver family, so getting to the Busa has been a long, bumpy, windy road with LOTS of potholes..
As a kid, I never had the opportunity to ride any kind of minibike or related, as they were deemed "too dangerous". It wasn't until my mid-teens that I got to sneak a ride on my cousin's KX80. Of course I stalled the thing like you wouldn't believe, but that was still enough to get me started on the cycle road.. A few years later, around when I was 20, my cousin and I were just hangin' around, and we started to reminisce about the "old times" when we got to mess around as kids and teens, and the topic of the bike popped up- He still had it, and I told him we should dig it out.. He said he would if I'd let him drive my car at the time, which was a manual (he wanted to learn). So, I agreed, and we spent the day driving around in his development, me grinding the gears on his KX80 once more, him grinding the gears in my car- We trashed some gears that day, but both of us got what we wanted.. Experience.
2 years later, had my first ride on a sport bike when I got to test drive a '93 Katana 750. A private seller allowed a friend and I the opportunity to ride the bike, and when asked if we'd ever ridden before, of course both of us said "oh yeah uh-huh".. So off I went, riding the most powerful bike I'd ever been on in my life at that point. I didn't get to buy the bike, but got more experience.
My first official bike was
my '88 Katana in 2000. Paid $900 for it, and it had 13K miles. Fought the wife tooth and nail, and finally got it home and in the garage. Loved the bike and put 4K miles on it before it finally started to have problems. Sold it in 2003 for $$$ towards a car I am restoring, and swore I'd have another bike one day.. That day came in Feb of this year, when my wife insisted we get a home equity line to do some home improvement.. I really didn't want the added debt, but we're hoping to sell our house in the next year and it needed alot (new heater/AC, water heater, floors, etc). I told her I'd agree to the home equity line on ONE condition.. I'm sure you can guess what it was
View attachment 775942 I am now the father of a little girl, so that made this battle even harder than the one for the Katana.. But, I'm happy to say that I emerged victorious once more, and can say with pride that the only time this bike is going, is if I'm trading her in on a cruiser.. Not going down that road again!!!
