I prefer Shoei lids because they have had extremely good quality for quite a number of years (I have a Shoei built in 1989 that is still good to this day)
I'm partial to Arai. I just recently replace my Arai Astral X with a Arai RX-7. I also just bought a Suomy Spec-1R Hawaiian Flower. I'll give my impressions when it arrives. I like Arai and Suomy because of their guarded face shield holder. I've had HJC's hung on the back while parked and sitting on the bike and while getting off the bike my foot would hit the helmet and break the shield holder.

I started out with the Shoei line (whatever came before the X11 was made) and that shell (and the x11) fit my head the best. The downside is that they don't have the soft pads that I've found the Arai helmets to have. I finally was able to purchase an Arai this year when they came out with the Profile shell, since the RX7 wasn't made for my head.
I've had Icon before but don't know how much I'd trust it in a crash. My girlfriend has a Scorpion which has a lot of high end features of the other brands but for a lot less money. If I was advising someone who is starting out riding on a helmet brand it would be Scorpion.
Did anyone say GMax yet? I didn't have the patience to read through 6 pages, sorry.
This is the webbikeworld.com 2007 helmet of the year. Very light, excellent optics, outstanding airflow, led lights on the back, $107 retail and looks GREAT!
I have it and I LOVE it and the $$$ I saved. It's a little loud, that would be the down side, but so is my 'busa...
Consider my last post another vote for the GMax. That kind of airflow is very important when you ride in Florida! I love the extra visibility of the LEDs at night too.
I have had KBC, Shoei (X11 and RF1000) and a Sparxx. My favorite is the X11.
I have to say that helmets are relative not just becuase of the brand, but also your sized head. Always good to try them on first because my brand may not fit your head so well . . .
I tried a Shoei rf 1000, X11 and Arai corsair rx 7. Among them, Arai fits best, but can't afford it. Same goes with x 11. These days you can get graphic Shoei rf 1000 with half of price mentioned. Shoei rf 1000 is much quieter than my old Agv helmets, and fits very comfortable. Best value among those three mentioned.
