Who Rode Today?

They're everywhere.
I usually don't even count how many I see.
Not to mention how many cross in front of me, including rabbits, squirrels, possums, racoons, another bear a couple weeks ago, oh...and 2 local dogs that love to chase cars.
lol
I pay no attention to it, and figure 2 deer strikes in 25 years, with neither putting me down is pretty good.
Believe it or not it's the Robins around here that are dangerous...they are looking for love and chase each other all over the place low to the ground....I don't know how many I've almost hit...

Crazy birds!

Crazy birds!

I've hit at least 6 or 7 birds over the years, 2 at once years ago, about 70mph...in the chest...wearing a t-shirt(dummy).
That felt pretty good.
Worse is ducking vultures, I've come really close a few times.
A friend hit one last year on his gsxr1k and it tore a fairing up pretty good.

Crazy birds!

I don’t get why they seem to nest or congregate near roads. There’s plenty of countryside away from the noise and traffic on the roads but still, it seems, they fly at or around us as we pass!

We get a lot of turkey vultures around here who love roadkill...I'm always watching for them as they take a lot of real estate to get airborne...I actually stopped one time when there were 4 of them on the side of the road-I just knew they'd be trying to take off...and they did....every which way too....

I had a guy in front of me hit a crow on his cruiser years ago...he was wearing a heavy leather jacket and still had a bruise on his chest....there were feathers everywhere when he hit it...he said it was all he could do to not drop the bike.

Must be teenaged birds in lust...

Look at how we ran around after girls in our day...

A bunch of them flew into me as I passed by some barbed wire fencing alongside the road on tour one year. Sort of looked like pigeons but I doubt it. One hit my right glove and bounced into my chest. Another hit my helmet high up. Several hit the fairing on my 82 CBX with feathers flying all over. A couple miles later an occasional feather kept flying up below the gauges around the headstock so I pulled over. One of them was lodged against the engine block below the oil cooler! After a proper burial I resumed…:)

I dodged a few squirrels, two turkeys and two snakes today. One snake was about 3-4’ long and haulin azz! The other, miles away was only a foot long. That one seemed to be having a harder time crossing the pavement. Some cars were coming the other way a couple miles later that probably got the lil one. No deer today but it was bright sun and mid to afternoon temps. Have yet to see a live bear though.

Wow, no bears?!
That's hard to belive with where you ride, and how much.
But, they do have a huge habitat there.
Here, sadly, there has been a tremendous amount of logging in recent years, so alot of habitat lost, and animals are all over where they weren't normally seen.
I saw 2 black snakes too, one about 3' taking it's time crossing. The other, about 2', apparently took too much time...and didn't make it.
Turkeys are everywhere too, 3-4, or 10-12 at a time.

F'n daddy long legs dinosaur turkeys here too.
Really.
Zoom in and look at the size of that thing in front of my old F-250 with a leveling kit/raised front.
Big birds do lots of damage.

Living in London, how long does it take you to get to these kinds of roads?

I got in 135 miles today and met a nice couple in their 60s on a US tour. Their loaded BMW had German license plates and they said they were heading east to NY where they would fly home and ship their bike back. Next stop would be Vegas and then the Grand Canyon. Nice couple but they barely spoke English relying on an App on their phone for translation. Met them at the top of the Golden Chain highway.
