Woman gets a $835 parking ticket.

Wow, poor little princess that got caught braking the law. Yea, fine is high. However, I bet no one will ever park in the grass again. Now she cannot get her new Coach purse. Cry me a river. Do you want some cheese with the wine.

actually they say:

"dont do the crime if you cant do the time, yeah dont do it"

- USA TV Series-Robert Blake as Baretta[/url]

parking tickets are infractions not crimes

infraction = $ fine
crime = $ fine or incarceration

I was adapting the phrase, not quoting. The point is the same: If you don't want to deal with the penalty, don't break the law. If you do break the law, don't whine about the penalty when you get busted.

I agree totally with the fact she should get a ticket, but not $835.00. Justice now a days seem like it is all about making money off the taxpayer when their bottom line comes up short... Ticket should fit the offense... I like the idea of making it a tow a way zone...

A "manageable" fine allows the "pay to play" attitude to persist. How many times do we see folks break the law simply b/c they can "afford" the penalty. By making the fine UN-manageable, you <gasp> ACTUALLY DISCOURAGE the behavior and <gasp again> actually reduce the likelihood of collecting fines! What a concept!

Here we have speed camera's every 3-5 inches (slight exhaggeration....but not by much). Get snapped and it's a $40 ticket. People get them all the time, repeatedly. Because it's "affordable" for the majority. Doesn't inflict much pain so it doesn't do much to stop the behavior. If it was $750 a pop, everyone would wine that it's unfair but I'll bet the behavior would pretty much stop and therefore revenues would vanish not increase.

So, if ya want the behavior to stop, make the fine hurt. If you want revenue, make the fine manageable. In the case of the parking on the grass issue, they obviously want it to stop.

would a small, say one foot fence between the fire curb and the grass solve the problem ?

And who will pay to install and maintain that? All of the community that DOESN'T park on the grass? Is it up to them to pay to manage the 1% that can't/won't/don't abide by the posted rules?

Again, don't want a parking fine, park according to the rules. The fine might be huge, but it's EASILY avoided.

I agree, she does deserved the ticket, but I dont think should be that much. I wonder what is the fine if she run a stop sign or a red light or any other moving violation that does put others in danger. I bet those are less expensive than this one. IMO

Red light fines range up to about $500 nationwide. I agree that THOSE fines should be MASSIVE. But the penalties for other "infractions" are irrelevant. The city wants people to stop parking on the grass, they don't, so they give them a reason to stop parking on the grass. From the lady's reaction, seem that $835 to park on the grass WILL keep her off of it in the future. Think she'd be goin' to court over $100? Didn't sound like it. She'll be happy if she pleads it down to $100 and then she'll feel that she can do it again. Problem COMPLETELY unresolved.

Well, it could always be a progressive penalty or like I said before make it a tow a way zone. It is not a moving violation and does not endanger anyone...

She admitted to passing open parking spaces for a no parking? not saying I agree with the fine, but she deserves something. Guess she was thinking she had a real off-road vehicle cause she could get the Escalade on the grass... haha

last time i checked penalties are supposed to hurt and be uncomfortable. she deserves the 800 fine. she is a dumb a$#....she first off parked in a no parking zone second she endangered people by jumping the curb were pedestrians walk...note she had to cross a sidewalk to get to were she did park...this park is large and has a ton of people hundred and hundreds on game days.....most of which are kids under 14!!! the owners of this park work very hard to keep it nice!!!

by the way in the state of iowa if you park in a fire zone its a 500 dollar ticket! handicap is a 500 dollar ticket as well. on the day in question she was parked in the grass in front of the fire safety zone. the fine should have been a minimum of 500 dollars but its all fresh laid sod and she did property damage as well! vehicles running on new sod wreck it. she is very lucky they dont sue her for the damages she did to the property and the replacement of the sod she destroyed.

Sounds to me like Iowa makes up for revenue short comings off the backs of its citizens. If you are ok with that then so am I. It is happening everywhere and that was my original point. Government is out of control with these outrageous fines. My last $.02...

Im just sayin if the grass is so important a small fence, or better yet wood bollards, would easily keep cars off.

Here is a reality of life:
The busier and more crowded an area gets, the more fences/bollards are NEEDED.

This way kids and dogs can still get to the grass to play. Or is the city against kids and dogs playing on grass.
Because way back in the day when I was a kid and a dog I liked playing on grass.

Because the sign said no PARKING on Grass, not keep off the grass.

Im just sayin.

In many places, when you park illegally they tow your car. Add it up that way - parking fine = $100, tow charge = $350, impound fee = $200, taxi ride to impound lot = $50, damage to car by tow truck and anxiety over what happened to your car - priceless...
I could be worse at least her car was still where she left it...

Pretty cut and dry....why would you think it's ok to park on the grass? Drive over a red curb??? Because other people did? no, that's doesn't make it right. She obviously feels some sense of entitlement and she got busted.....great lesson to teach her kids too! Kinda typical though, that mentality....

Folks like her will likely be the one that turns left in front of a motorcycle, with some lame excuse for that too. ???

Not sayin' that gov't never gets out of control. I agree that it usually does. However, this isn't like taxes where we have no real choice or control to avoid the assessment. She could have made the no cost choice to simply not park on the grass, just like EVERYONE ELSE that parked legally for FREE.

Really? You don't think an $835 dollar fine will have any deterrent effect? I'm guessing it does and it not only saves the tax payers the money for installing/maintaining physical barriers, it also provides monies to the comm when someone decides their more entitled than everyone else.

How about post the Fine Amount on the sign. Then no complaints ?

But she claims she never saw any indication that parking on the grass was illegal. Guess you'd have to follow her around with the sign. Then she'd probably sue for invasion of privacy or stalking.

Those who feel themselves entitled could care less what the law says...unless it's causes them trouble they can't avoid.

I've not seen a law yet that stops a law breaker. Only thing that does that is ENFORCEMENT of stringent penalties on those that do choose to break the law. If that doesn't happen, law breakers do what they want.

Exactly. She wants the fine lower so that she's comfortable breaking that law the next time around. If she gets away with it, her kids will learn that what she's doing is OK and they'll behave the same.

And yeah, can't ya hear it: "OMG...I was just turning and he came out of no where. He must have been speeding!" Meanwhile, the motorcycle and rider are in pieces, she'd get a "failure to yield right of way" traffic ticket and she'd be fine to do it again.

Strong penalties bring stron compliance and vice versa.

WHAT THE HECK IS WRONG? she didnt hurt the grass, no way she should be fined so much money. why is it such a big deal man i hate to see if she burned the toast. maybe she wanted to be close to here child, she didnt see the sign, what ever the case she does'nt diserve to be treated like she killed the popes dog. get over it ppl:poke:

Not true...
Just couldn't let this one go. Murderers get the death penalty, doesn't stop killing. Under your premise, if you get pulled over for speeding then they should take your bike... Be real.... PENALTY SHOULD FIT THE OFFENSE... It was not a moving violation and she did not turn left in front of a motorcycle!
